I have the thin PS2 model 77001, and I keep getting can't read disc. It worked fine one day and when I tried to play it again it just keeps giving me read disc error. I have cleaned it, taken it apart and cleaned it and still nothing. I read about some adjustment screws but I don't see them. Can you please help me? Thanks
You said the model is 77001?? is that the slim type ps2?? if it is try this troubleshooting step
if the console is lying down flat where the disc lid is at the right side, try applying pressure on the lower right corner of the lid, sometimes the lid's safety button gets worn out and it will give you disc read error if this solves the problem then the button really is busted, if you have technical background you try and change the button

Even if the game isn't scratched, you should try holding it under a light to see if there are any fingerprints or smudges on the disc. You can try cleaning the disc with a lint-free cloth if you've got one, though I've never had trouble with a cotton t-shirt. Wipe from the center of the disc straight towards the outer edge. Do this for the entire disc and try it again.
If that doesn't work, please update this issue with the error message you're seeing if any. Does the disc show up in the PS2 browser? Do you get a disc read error? Does the screen just go black when you try to play the game?
If a dual layer disc is not functioning, there is a problem with your laser. This is a frequent issue with Playstation 2 consoles. As a laser starts to fail, the first type of disc to stop reading is the dual layer disc. Eventually regular DVDs will start skipping in the middle of the game and loading times will increase. Eventually it will stop reading DVDs as well. The solution is a replacement laser. You can find one at the following website for $30 including shipping:
Disc read errors are mainly due to worn out lens or dirty PS2

I had the same problem with mine. it would play the ps2 games just fine but when i put a DVD in, it would click and keep saying reading disc.. i took it apart and gently cleaned the lense with a qtip and now it works fine
I've encountered similar problem with my PS2. I really can't play the disc that I bought. There might be some burning problem that difficult to read by your PS2. What I did I've tried to copy it and burn in to a better DVD disc and it works. Try it.
Sounds like you need to get your money back ..the resurfaceing can also do more bad than good But a little trick lightly rub a crayon over the disk ,,old pantyhose works great rub it off from center out then try your disk ,,have saved many good games that way
ahh same happened to me. my ps2 was old (about 3 years) it worked fine untile i accidently dropped it on the floor. same happened on every game. but on movies, it only played the adverts and then stopped. So i went to a company and they fixed it.
