INK EMPTY BLACK, PLEASE OPEN COVER - BUT HAS NEW INK

After not using this fax machine for a few months I got this message, Ink empty black, please open cover. So I replaced all the cartridges with new. I still get the message ink empty black, please open cover! Help please...... same thing with mine. didn't use for awhile, and have tried 2 different full cartridges. even tried unplugging and it still won't believe that there is ink. unfortunately, it won't even let the print head clean when it thinks there is no ink, it just keeps doing the same thing. Driving me crazy too!

if you mean the little round kind of screen between the single cartridge and the printer, yes. same thing. also tried resetting, but it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

  • cymoril Jun 05, 2008

tried the unplugging and putting all the ink back in, and after the cleaning cycle was over, it still came up with black empty etc.

  • cymoril Jun 06, 2008

I didn't try the re-install driver, because I have an older version printer and a computer that is WindowsXP which says the driver is built-in and not to use the disc that came with the printer. I didn't see any place to adjust anything from the computer, but one of the issues with the built-in drivers is that they don't offer all the features as originally. I can maybe try the tape, but don't see a sensor on the ink cartridge, does it look like a little air hole? There are no metal strips as on my Epson.

  • cymoril Jun 06, 2008

I finally figured out where to put the black tape-straight on the back of the cartridge near the top where you can just make out some little strips of metal inside the cartridge, not outside as some other printers. I didn't have a roll of tape, but swiped a piece off something else, and for the first time since I can't remember when, my printer doesn't say black ink empty, open cover.!!! I wish I would have found out about that before throwing several cartridges away thinking they were junk.

another thing to try is to remove the cartridges, then unplug it and plug it back in and then put them back in.

  • Benjamin Patri

you can also try putting some black electrical tape over the sensor on the ink cartridge on the side facing the printer

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 05, 2008

You can also try fixing this in the settings on the computer and if all else fails, uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the printer.

did you try everything that I suggested yet?

  1. Open the ink cartridge cover. Pull the lock release lever down and take out the ink cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.
inkrep1.gif
  1. Reinstall the ink cartridge and lift each lock release lever and push it until it clicks, and then close the ink cartridge cover.
amin3b_u_g033.gif
  1. The LCD should then display:
Did you change xxxxxx? Yes No.
The LCD should display this question for the color(s) that was replaced.
BE SURE to select Yes using the up or down arrow key or Dial Pad. If Yes is not selected for the replaced cartridges, INK EMPTY will appear again.
  1. After all the correct selections are made, the machine will then go into a cleaning cycle.

If the LCD displays "No Cartridge", there is a possibility that ink cartridges other than ones you replaced are empty. Follow steps below to check the ink volume. If there are empty ink cartridges, please replace them.

  1. Press Ink or Ink Management.
    * If your Brother machine does not have the Ink or Ink Management key on the control panel, please pressMenu. Press the Up or Down arrow key to select Ink or Ink Management, and then press OK.

  2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to select Ink Volume.
    Press OK.
  3. The LCD shows the ink volume.
Press the Up or Down arrow key to select the color (colour) you want to check.
  4. Press Stop/Exit.

If the message "No Cartridge" does not disappear, unplug the machine from the AC power outlet and wait approximately 10 seconds, and then plug it back in. If the date and time appear on the display, the issue is resolved.

Where do the ink cartriges on a brother mfc 5460cn fo

Your machine is equipped with an ink dot

counter. The ink dot counter automatically

monitors the level of ink in each of the 4

cartridges. When the machine detects an ink

cartridge is running out of ink, the machine

will tell you with a message on the LCD.

The LCD will tell you which ink cartridge is low

or needs replacing. Be sure to follow the LCD

prompts to replace the ink cartridges in the

correct order.

Even though the machine tells you that an ink

cartridge is empty, there will be a small

amount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is

necessary to keep some ink in the ink

cartridge to prevent air from drying out and

damaging the print head assembly.

a Open the ink cartridge cover.

If one or more ink cartridges are empty,

for example Black, the LCD shows

Ink Empty Black and

Replace Ink.

b Pull the lock release lever down and

take out the ink cartridge for the color
shown on the LCD.

c Open the new ink cartridge bag for the

color shown on the LCD, and then take

out the ink cartridge.
d Remove the protective yellow cap (1).

Note

If the protective yellow caps come off

when you open the bag, the cartridge will

not be damaged.

e Each color has its own correct position.

Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of

the arrow on the label.

f Lift each lock release lever and push it

until it clicks, and then close the ink

cartridge cover.

g If you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD

may ask you to verify that it was a brand

new one. (For example,

Did You Change Blck?) For each

new cartridge you installed, press 1

(Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot

counter for that color. If the ink cartridge

you installed is not a brand new one, be

sure to press 2 (No).

If you wait until the LCD shows

Near Empty and Ink Empty, the
machine will automatically.

I changed the ink cartridge the black one but it still says cartridge empty I unplugged it and it still sais the same thing

My MFC-420CN acts up occationally. Remove the new cartridge, hold it as you would to install it, Rotate it to the right about 45°. Snap it with the back of a finger (dislodges any air bubbles in ink feed). Reinstall cartridge (ensure it is fully seated. This works for both Brother cartridges and the eforcity cartridges I've been using for the past couple of years. HTH

I don't know how to change the ink bought this printer from a guy at work no manual

Lift the scanner cover from the right-hand side of the MFC until
it locks securely into the open position.

If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the
LCD shows Ink Empty Black and Cover is Open.

Pull the ink cartridge hook toward you and remove the ink
cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.

Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD,
and then take out the ink cartridge.

Remove the cartridge covers.

Each color has its own correct position. Keep the ink cartridge
in an upright position when you insert it into slot. Press down on
the ink cartridge until the hook snaps over it.

Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the
scanner cover support down and close the scanner cover.

If you replaced an ink cartridge while Near Empty was
displayed on the LCD, the LCD may ask you to verify that it was
a brand new one. Example: Did You Change Blck? 1.Yes
2.No. For each new cartridge you installed, press 1 on the dial
pad to automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. If the
ink cartridge you installed is not a brand new one, please be
sure to select 2.

If you wait until Ink Empty message is displayed on the LCD,
the MFC will automatically reset the ink dot counter.

If the Install message is on the display after you have
installed ink cartridges, check that the ink cartridges are
installed properly.

Hope that helps you!

Brother MFC-210C does not reset after ink is replaced

The usual obvious fix is to buy a new catridge, insert, power off machine, then switch back on to reset any sensors. But if the circuitry on the machine itself is faulty it wont fix it.

I used to own an MFC 260C. It had a perfectly good full ink catridge in it, that was working fine, until...it suddenly did not recognise the cartridge anymore.

I pulled the machine apart and found that 2 of the 4 sensors on the cct board at the back of the cartridge housing were loose. These sensors pass light through the exposed part of the cartridge to see if ink is there. So if these are faulty, you will never clear the "No Cartridge" or "Ink Empty..." or "Near Empty Ink ..." messages on the MFC260C and probably other similar printers in the MFC range.

Why did they fail? Because the soldering on these sensors was poor quality.

I would never buy another Brother machine because of this, also because they design the machine to be totally useless unless all the ink ccartridges are full. Shame on you Brother, and kiss my *** for the $160 pile of junk I bought off you that was only on its second batch of cartridges (ie very little use)

Ink problems....

Take all carts out of the machine. Have a look into the cart holder. Is there ink swapping beneath the white plastic? (You might shake the machine ;-)

If yes, the cart holder leaks and needs replacement.

If not (your lucky!) it could be that the automatic cleaning procedure which starts when a cart is changed has soaked the carts empty.

Do set machine with date and time and NEVER unplug NOR use a power switch which breaks the power supply.

Do use constant power and switch off machine by pressing stand-by-fax-button!

Everytime when machine comes to (new) power contact it runs an extensive ink cleaning procedure. thats why your carts are always near empty....
The stand-by will prevent this and machine does some cleaning procedures which consumes only a few drops(!) of ink!

The display asks you if you have changed the carts. Do answer this question by pressing 1 for YES or 2 for NO.
This will reset the built-in inkcountermanagement to the correct settings
