Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

1 Answer

PNY memory So this is NOT compatible? Or did I just install it wrong? It seems to be very expensive too. Dell has much better prices.

Hi

Dell Dimension 5150 supports DDR2 400MHz (PC2-3200) and DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4300) unbuffered SDRAM Memory (DIMM). You may install a total of four DIMMs in capacities of 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB. The maximum memory supported is 4GB.

From your query, I think the obvious question is; What is specification of the PNY DIMM and/or does the PNY DIMM meet the requirements for Dimension 5150?

Check for memory configuration and installation procedures for Dimension 5150 - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/parts1.htm#wp1364711

The Chipset used on Dimension 5150 is Intel 945G Express. I am not aware of specific compatibility issues regarding the Intel 945G and PNY Memory modules. However, there may really be known issues that I am not aware of.

To proceed, ensure that the PNY Memory is compatible with Dimension 5150. If not, install compatible (memory type, speed, capacity) DIMMs.

Let me know if further help is needed.

Mike

Issues with 2gb 32ddr dell memory compatible in dell gx280

Unfortunately, the CPU on these computers may be capable of handling the 2GB memory, the motherboard isn't on either system.

The specs for the Dell GX280 are available here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx280/en/ug/specs02.htm . This system takes 400 or 533 MHz DDR2 non-ECC memory and the form-factor determines the maximum memory. In the mini-tower format, you have 4 DIMM slots and can have 4 GB of memory. In the small form factor, it takes 2 GB max.

The Dell E310 specs are available here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3100/en/sm/specs0.htm . This system can only support 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) memory.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Cindy Wells
(who had a similar Pentium 4 computer with the 1 GB limit. Since that system was running a 32-bit system and only actively addressed 3 GB, I didn't try to put 2 GB sticks in any of the 4 memory slots.)

It sounds like you are having memory issues with your computer. The best thing you can do is just replace the memory the computer sounds just fine you just need new memory. If you go to this link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134117&cm_re=DDR2-800-_-20-134-117-_-Product on newegg.com. Order these sticks of memory you would be fine. All you need to do is just open up the dell case. Remove the old memory sticks from the main motherboard. Then install the new sticks and you will be able to reboot your system and should run just fine.

Unit came with 2 256 mem sticks--bought and installed 2 1GB sticks(pc3200,400mhz,84pin,low density,DDR--unit will not boot

The 2 1Gb RAM are either the wrong type or they are incompatible.
Try to use the same brand and speed as the 256 Mb RAM that was installed in your Dell.

I want to add more ram. Where do I get it? Dell

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, so don't 'Shoot the Messenger'!

The Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop PC uses RDRAM ram memory.
VERY expensive stuff!

Supporting Data:
This is Dell Support, Manuals, and the Dimension 8200 Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/

Scroll down the list to the heading - Specifications, and left-click on it.

Scroll the page down until you come to the heading - Memory
Now look at the first subheading - Architecture
RDRAM

You have 4 ram memory slots. (memory connectors)

EACH, ram memory slot can support up to a Maximum amount, of 512MB. (512 MegaBytes)

TOTAL Maximum Amount for your computer is 2GB. (Not shouting)

1024MB = 1GB. (1024 MegaBytes = 1 GigaByte)

The type of Rdram ram memory is PC800, and it is Non-ECC.

(Error Correcting Control, or also stated as Error Correcting Code.
Used mostly for Server computers. Your computer does not use ECC ram memory)

In My Humble Opinion, (And again, don't shoot the messenger), it would be better money spent to buy a decent affordable computer, than it would be to upgrade the ram memory in this computer.

This statement is based upon the fact that the Dell Dimension 8200 ships with 128MB's of ram memory.
(Makes it a pretty slow computer. Rdram or not)

The average cost to install, for example, 1GB of ram memory is OUTLANDISH! (Not shouting)

Example 1:

http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=24927

Example 2:

http://www.pcmemorystore.com/Dell-Dimension-8200-ram.htm

For about another $100 you can buy a pretty decent new desktop computer, that will run the one you have in circles.

Just my thoughts.

Conflicting information about maximum memory allowed

Your problem is not so clear. I guess you are having a P-4 with MSI Mother board. Almost all motherboards that support DDR 333/400 can support up to 2 GB of memory.

It is always better to buy brands like kingston.

Is pny ddr2 pc2-5300 2X1GB compatable with the DELL DIMENSION 1100?

Hello mrkennx6

I was unable to access pny's web site to use their memory configurator for your Dell Dimension 1100. I did, however, find information regarding the RAM supported in your computer on Dell's web site.

You can find downloads and information HERE on Dell's web site (for your Dell Dimension 1100).

HERE is the Owner Manual for your computer. Please, refer to page 55 for information regarding the type of memory your computer supports.

===
To summarize information taken from the manual:
Install (matched pair) memory modules in DIMM slots 3 & 4

The matched pair of memory DIMMs should be either [PC2700 (DDR 333MHz)] or [PC3200 (DDR 400MHz)] SDRAM.

If you install a single module, be sure to install it
to DIMM slot 3 (the connector closest to the processor).

(Do not install ECC memory modules)

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have more questions, etc on this topic.

Thank you
BJ
