att 2 wire is a Adsl Modem (Requires a telephone line jack to get the signals) but charter communication is a cable internet service (not DSL) , Requires a TV cable service for internet . These two jacks differs and there working differs .. Means : Att works with the username and password type of authentication but charter requires the MAC address of modem for authentication . Therefore for a cable internet 2wire 2701hg-b modem cant be used . But yes in case charters has username and password authentication and works with the telephone jack in house then its possible to use the same modem.
Modem and routers are considered only as access point you computer may be able to connect to your router but if you dont have a DSL line you will not be able to go on line... if you dont want a DSL line there are service that concentrates on wireless alone... in this DSL line are not required nor router but may provide you a USB wireless adapter that has their wireless service then again try calling an Internet Service provider for this options...
The network appliance you're asking about is a modem with a wireless router built in. Basically, it's an all-in-one device. It will replace your already existing modem. It is a wise upgrade for any AT&T DSL connection.
Connect the cable at both ends and do a red button (inside card door) reset of the DVR. To test the connection, do thus: Menu -> .....setup -> system setup -> network setup -> test connection. If it shows not connected then "reset defaults" and run "connect now" As a basic security feature the ATT DSL 2Wire 2701HG-B router/gateway requires you to enter its pre-assigned WEP key to connect beyond the unit itself and then to the internet. Since the Direct TV DVR HD24D only does a basic connection without having a place to enter the 2701HG-B WEP key it never actually reaches the internet. The 2Wire 2701HG-B has the ability for one attached unit to "pass through" its firewall and internal security settings using a so called "DMZplus" mode. I set the HR24D DVR to such a mode within the 2Wire unit and the DVR connected with the internet flawlessly.
I use ATT as well, but I am running ubuntu. for some reason in order to connect to the internet I have to restart networking after boot. I just use networking helper scripts, otherwise, for some reason it does not key-in WPA through the manual config properly.
The local Apple Genius Bench was nice to reload iChat and OS for us. But he could not get iChat going for me and my relative. It looks like iChat will have trouble between DSL and Cable but DSL to DSL and Cable to Cable each case is fine. Anyway, after connecting to Apple iChat Test Site Appleu3test04, my MacBook started to work better with iChat as my relative is able to see and hear us although on my end the incoming picture is not too clear. Then finally Upgrade of New OS seems to make the picture sharper. Thinking back, the original problem came from Modem upgrade to higher speed but I did not use the new DSL telephone filters. Please post this up to help other frustrated iChat users. Anyway, we still like Apple! By Jim on 05/30/2009
that is typically a bad username in the modem, you will have to put there temp user name in for registration for the DSL. and after that you can put the username into the modem that you created during the registration process. Should be taken care of.
