THE DEVICE WILL NOT POWER ON OR OFF USING THE POWER BUTTON SITUATED AT THE TOP LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE DEVICE.
THE ONLY WAY I CAN POWER ON IS THROUGH THE DOCKING STATION. THE PRODUCT IS IN PERFECT CONDITION AS IT WAS ONLY BOUGHT DEC 2007 AND HAS BEEN WELL LOOKED AFTER.

I have partly solved the problem by leaving the box switched on (any channel) then when the programme is about to record Archos 606 WiFi will switch the cable box to the correct channel and record. It will not however turn the box off after recording this has to be done manually using the remote handset.
In the instruction manual for the Archos docking station there is a footnote saying that in very rare cases the On/Off function does not always work and I am wondering if the Samsung (NTL) Box is one of them. I cannot get a direct answer from Archos support team on this issue when I have sent numerous E-mails. According to the manual I am working on the correct code number for the Samsung (NTL) box.
The adapter that comes with the Archos 605 must be firmly fixed to the docking station by pressing very firmly with a loud click. It feels delicate so if you only click it lightly it wont connect properly. This is poor design but at least it is OK now.
Another call to the US Tech support, different technican, and the problem was solved. We did not have the docking station plugged into an electrical outlet. We had the Archos in the docking station, and turned on, but it needs the extra power apparently from the AC. Problem solved! Was able to download photos direct from the camera to the Archos with the USB.
What kind of HDD do you have, do you have any type of output on it. You stated that you haven't connected the docking station to it and the TV...? The best thing to do is to connect your Archos to the Docking station. Set the docking station up correctly, with cables coming out of the HDD (if it has some sort of output) to the station and out of the station to your TV. Once you set that up, you can use the Archos as a mini DVR or VCR. Go to the REC option on the main screen of Archos, you'll have an option for Video Recorder (tab on top). If you play any source on the HDD, then all you have to do is press the Rec option on the Archos. If you already have a file on the HDD, then try just moving it over into the Archos once you connect the Docking station to your computer via USB or just use the USB cable connected to the computer with the HDD. I use the USB preference as Windows Media Device. (found under menu/settings/system). Is is basically a HDD itself. Remember the Archos will only play certain videos without the purchase of any extra plugins.
This problem seems to occur when the device overheats. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but all my videos set at 720 by 480 wont play when the device is left running for a long period of time. The smaller video files, however, still play. I think it deals with the amount of system resources required for such files to play. If you turn the device off completely by going to menu, power, and turn off device, and leave it sit for 30 minutes, all files should play properly when you turn it back on.
As a suggestion, DO NOT leave your Archos powered on and on the dvr station. This causes the device to constantly run, and if you havent noticed the Archos operates at an extremely high temperature.
