When i insect the battery into the mouse will it turn on a light

not necessary. The optical mouses can use infra red or visible laser as a case of visible source mouses ,after connecting the battery u can get red light when any surface comes in proximity.but in case of infra red mouse, although same thing happens ,but infra red is not visible to naked eye.

Dstv remote doesnt work..

Take your cell phone and turn the camera on, then aim the remote at the cell phones camera while pressing different buttons.

The infra red light will become visible and be flickering at different intervals depending on what button is pressed.

That is the start to see if it is even "TRANSMITTING".

Any infra red device that transmits will do this on a web or cell phone camera regardless of what it is.

They can see what we cannot with out eye!

Start there first if all coding fails and you still have the red indicator light working.

I hope this helped solve step one!
