I bought a antenna from Fry's for my pro-96. Now I cant get any frequencies unless I have that one on(it is HUGE). The regular antennas dont pick up the frequencies, accept sometimes the police. There is no "A" on any of my channels. Radio Shack is clueless. HELPPPPPP Would you mind calling me? or e-mailing me? firstname.lastname@example.org
The new antenna you bought might have had too big of a center pin in the connector and when you put it on the scanner it may have pushed down or widened the socket in the connector where it's supposed to fit.
Also, you may have just become accustomed to the better coverage you get with the big antenna to the point where if you put on the old one it almost seems like it's not working.

Do you have any frequencies programmed into your radio scanner?
If not, then that is why you're not receiving anything.
If on the other hand you do have frequencies programmed, are they the correct frequencies for your location?
Are the frequencies the Tx or Rx frequencies that you programmed, The Tx frequencies are the correct frequencies to program, as Rx is the mobile(usually) Tx frequencies, and unless you're within 5 miles of that mobile, you won't hear it, and you certainly won't hear the base transmissions, unless it's a high powered Simplex Frequency.
When police, public safety, etc re-band then some scanners may not pick up the frequencies and you need to update the firmware (when available) to keep your scanners ability to monitor certain frequencies, pairs of frequencies, splinter channels etc.
If you programmed the correct frequency, you should be getting reception. Check www.RadioReference.com to verify the frequency. Otherwise, you may be too far from the transmitter to receive signals. Try your scanner in other locations, check your antenna, and try receiving the PD on another scanner.
The MARCS - Ohio Multi-Agency Radio Communications system - is a Motorola Type II SmartZone Omnilink Trunking system that utilizes APCO-25 digital transmissions. Your BC145XL is not compatible with trunking or digital systems. In order to follow the MARCS you will need one of the following scanners: GRE PSR-500, PSR-600 Radio Shack PRO-106, PRO-197, PRO-96, PRO-2096 Uniden BC250D, BC785D, BC296D, BC796D, BCD396T, BCD396T, BCD996T, BCD996XT, or the brand new HomePatrol-1
If there is no frequencies on your scanner it will lock all channels out. if all your frequencies are on one bank and you accidentally hit that bank number and turn it off it will lock out all channels. If that's the case just hit that bank no. back on and they will unlock.
Try turning the squelch to minimum, press Scan, or you may have to program it. To program, Press PGM, select the channel you want, press PGM, use the number key and ./DELAY to enter the frequency including the decimal point you want to store, if you make a mistake press CLR, press the ENTER button to store it. You can get your frequency's for your state at www.RadioReference.com ...hope this was helpful..
Turn it on, press the manual button, then rotate the squelch knob until you hear silent, press scan and wait to see if you hear transmissions,if not ,you may need to re-program it, to re-program, press manual, enter the channel number, press manual, enter the frequency you want including the decimal point, press E. If you make a mistake, press CLR to erase. You can get the frequency for your state at RadioFreq.com or RadioReferance.com. hope this helps..
on scan mode press (man) for manual then pgm then trunk. screen should read not trunked press mode. if it does say that then press scan, and it should work. but if it doesn't say not trunked then press mode until it does say not trunked, then press scan. should work.
