Its actually a WEP key, this wep key is saved in the route setup page. if you cant remember what the WEP key or the password for your wireless network, then you can access the setup page of the router and check if from there. go to this link to know how to do that in your router. click here.

George,
With regards to your concern there is big possibility that your rotuer is not yet configured properly for internet connection. Can you tell me who is your internet service provider and the model no. and brand of you modem? So that I can give the steps on how you can get the router online.

Can't get my lap top to connect wirelessly to my router. Model # WRT54G2. The laptop says it is reaquiring the network address, but nothing happens.

The Network and Sharing Center in Microsoft* Windows Vista* can be used to set up a secure wireless connection to the Internet.

Note: If an Internet connection is not automatically made by the operating system, you may need to contact your access point (AP), broadband wireless router manufacturer, or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Set Up a Secure Wireless Connection to the Internet

These steps assume that your network adapter; AP or router; and cable, DSL or another type of modem have already been physically connected and configured. They allow you to create a new connection and configure it accordingly.

Follow these steps to set up a secure wireless connection to the Internet.

Note: If a wireless profile does not exist, you will need to create a secure wireless profile before you can set up a wireless connection to the Internet.

1. Access the Network and Sharing Center.

2. Select Set up a connection or network.

3. Click Connect to the Internet.

cs025389_selectanetwork_configurationnotmatching.jpg

4. Click Next.

5. Select Wireless. At this point, if the network(s) that are listed say that the network settings do not match the network requirements, as shown in Figure 1, create a secure wireless profile and then follow the steps again.

6. Select a network and click Connect. If you are not connected to the Internet, you may need to contact your AP/router manufacturer or ISP.

Access the Network and Sharing Center

To access the Network and Sharing Center, use one of the following methods:
  • Start » Control Panel » Network and Internet » Network and Sharing Center
  • Start » Network » Network and Sharing Center
  • Right-click the network system tray icon (the icon that displays two computer monitors) » Network and Sharing Center

If you are using the wireless router then you will not use the Ad-hoc mode.
You aloso don't need to share the internet on the modem.
make sure that if you conecnt the computer directly to the modem, it goes on line.
If it is on line then you can connect the modem to the router and computer to the router.
open the setup page and change the settings of the router.
once ytou setup the router then you should be able to go on line on all the computer.
You just need to connect to the network on other computers.

How do i put a password on my connection

Hello,
please write your address box the below link,
http://192.168.1.1
Then, it opens your user interface of the modem.
You can manage your modem now.
Find your Wifi Protected Access (WPA) and Pre Shared Key (PSK)
Choose one of encryption techniques. I use TKIP.
Wireless Protected Access with a Pre-Shared Key: The key is a password, in the form of a word, phrase or series of letters and numbers. The key must be between 8 and 63 characters long and can include spaces and symbols. Each client that connects to the network must use the same key (Pre-Shared Key).
Put a password to your connection settings and save it.
I hope this will be helpful.

When using a router with your internet connection (cable, dsl modem etc.) hooked directly to the routers data port it will use the roughter's dhcp to assign ip addresses to other computer on the network. If you have your internet connection hooked directly to a computer and are using internet connect sharing then you must disable the dhcp service on the roughter because the internet connect sharing has its own dhcp and it will assign all the ip addresses. to get into the roughter's setup you open a browser (internet explorer, mozilla etc.) and type 192.168.1.1

With a Linksys Router is a 2wire modem needed?

Do you have internet service (Cable, DSL, etc.)? If so, a router is a great tool for keeping the bad guys out of your home network. If you don't have an internet connection, a router is very useful for connecting multiple computers together. In some cases, you may want to share resources with a neighbor (unlikely, but possible). A wireless router would be extremely useful in this scenario.

So in answer to your question, a router doesn't need a modem to operate but it does need an internet connection to get you on the internet. A router by itself does not provide internet connectivity.
