i mean my flash icon on my display screen will "flash" and not allow me to take the picture...then i end up switching to no flash mode, and take the picture, but it ends up blurry. almost ready to buy a new camera!

We are having the same problem of the flash not working on our Canon A540. It did work for a short while in the program mode, but now I can only take pictures without the flash as it does not work at all anymore. We bought this camera brand new three years ago.

i have tried resetting to factory setting several times. and it may or may not help. sometimes, i think that it is related to the batteries. like, maybe it is only working when my batteries are brand new. just a theory, but i don't see how it would really matter.

I tried resetting the camera to the default settings and the camera did take pictures using flash. You can try this. Though resetting the camera solution works but the issue keep happening again and again. I am looking for a permanenet fix.

Turn off flash on camera

On the A540, press cursor-up (marked with a lightning bolt) to cycle through the flash settings. Details are in the "Using the Flash" section of the Basic Manual (page 8 in my copy).

If you need the manuals, you may download them from here.

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Hi, I have a Canon Speedlite 430EX II. I use it with Canon Rebel T1i. I don't really know a lot about using an external flash, I'm just an amateur I must say. I just always have it on automatic mode and...

Okay big breath, The Rebel T1i controls the flash (one reason you turn the flash on and off that's it) so you may have simply switched metering modes, with flash you should be on Evaluative mode.

Another thing is the camera may have been programed for TTL in the Menu E-TTL is the "normal" but if it's changed then the changes stays until you change it back.

I think it's the metering mode but if not you need to go into the camera Menu, Flash Control, External Flash, Flash Mode then select E-TTL. I found this all in a PDF manual of the Rebel T1i pages 139 through 141.

Hope this was a help.

How do I set my Canon Powershot A540 to delayed timer mode? I can see the icon on the menu, but it won't let me access it.

From the menu, select Drive Mode (third item from the top) then one of the self-timer options.

To start the self-timer, simply press the shutter release button.

A blinking flash icon usually means the flash is trying to charge but the battery level is too low to power it up.

Battery issue

Sorry for the late response (don't know how I missed this post?). Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your camera's battery icon is flashing. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status.
