Replace French keyboard with English only keyboard for my VAIO VGN-SZ780DN

My VAIO VGN-SZ780DN laptop has a Bilingual keyboard (English/French). I am wondering if I can replace the keyboard to a "English only" keyboard? Will the English keyboard works properly in the VGN-SZ780DN? Please help!

Hi, It is possible to replace the Keyboard to a "English Only" Language. Replacing the Keyboard layout to an English one will work normally. The language settings present in the Operating System usually controls the working of the Keyboard. I suggest that you try performing the below steps before replacing the Keyboard. Assuming that the installed OS is Windows Vista (However, it also holds good for Windows 7 OS), please perform the below steps. 1. Click on Start -> Control Panel (Classic view) 2. Click on the Regional and Language Options icon. 3. Click on the Keyboards and Languages tab. 4. Click on the Change keyboards button. 5. Change the default language from there. 6. Please select "English (United states) - US" there. After doing so, click on Apply and check if the layout is changed. One more small suggestion. Changing the Keyboard layout of a Notebook is very expensive. I suggest that you go for an external Keyboard which would be very very cheaper when compared to changing a Notebook Keyboard layout. Thanks and Regards, Mithun

SOURCE: Replace keyboard Sony

Hi..

I will provide you a solution this solution are very useful with you. You can do it with your self to follow this instructions. There are some image on how to replace the keyboard.

These instructions will help you to remove and replace keyboards on various laptops. I will not be able to cover all models but you’ll get the idea. Steps for removing and replacing the keyboard are similar for most laptops.
Warning!
- if your laptop is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, do not open the case or you can loose the warranty
- always remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter before you open the laptop case
- if you damage the keyboard connector on the motherboard you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard
- proceed on your own risk
Sony laptop
I took these pictures from a Sony Vaio PCG-K33 (model PCG-9S1L) notebook. Should be similar for some other Sony notebooks too.
sony-keyboard-1.jpg Insert a small flathead screwdriver under the keyboard bezel and carefully lift it up. Continue releasing plastic latches and removing the keyboard bezel with your fingers.
sony-keyboard-2.jpg
Be careful, on some models the bezel might be connected to the motherboard as it shown on the picture above. If you accidentally pulled the cable, connect it back. It is not necessary to disconnect the keyboard bezel from the motherboard in order to remove and replace the keyboard, just put it aside so you can access the keyboard screws.
sony-keyboard-3.jpg Remove three (or more) screws from the top of the keyboard. Carefully lift up the keyboard from the laptop case.
sony-keyboard-4.jpg The keyboard connects to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable. Before you pull the cable from the connector, you’ll have to unlock the connector.
sony-keyboard-5.jpg The image above illustrates how to unlock the keyboard connector. Carefully move the connector lock 2-3 millimeters up and after that pull the keyboard cable. To install the keyboard, follow the above mentioned steps in the reverse order.
Toshiba laptop
The following pictures were taken from a Toshiba Satellite A135 laptop. The keyboard removal instructions will be almost the same for most modern Toshiba laptops.
toshiba-keyboard-1.jpg The keyboard bezel removal procedure is similar to the above mentioned Sony Vaio laptop. Lift it up with a small screwdriver and remove using fingers. On most Toshiba laptops the keyboard bezel doesn’t have any circuit board underneath, it’s just a piece of plastic and you don’t have to worry about cables.
toshiba-keyboard-2.jpg After the bezel is removed you get an access to the keyboard screws. Remove two (or more) screws. Release the plastic latch pointed with the red arrow and lift up the keyboard. Carefully put the keyboard aside so you can access the connector underneath the keyboard. Do not forget that the keyboard is still connected to the motherboard.
toshiba-keyboard-3.jpg Before you remove the keyboard, you’ll have to open the connector and release the flat ribbon cable.
toshiba-keyboard-4.jpg Here’s a closeup picture of the keyboard connector on the motherboard. Be careful, this type of connector is fragile. On the left image the connector is closed. On the right image the connector is opened. Unlock the connector by moving the lock up as it shown on the right image and after that release the ribbon cable. Remove and replace the keyboard. For assembly instructions follow all the steps in the reverse order.

Hope it is helpful for you!

How to use Alt Car key?

I am guessing the Vaio you have is a Canadian model, which has alternate keyboard drivers for English and French. On these models, it seems the alt car key only works with the French keyboard (durr). To switch, press the LEFT control key and RIGHT shift key at the same time, then release. Now if you use the alt car key like the shift key, i.e. hold it down then press another key, you should be able to access the pink characters. To return to English keyboard, press left-ctrl and right-shift together again.

Bilingual keyboard

There is a small green Fn button near the start button you will have to use this with shift to use the green keys if you are in multi lingual mode, if you only use the laptop for french you can also change the regional settings for the keyboard to Just French and then they will work just by using shift.

Hope this helps FixYa,
