Dewalt 18 volt compact drill

Hi,
I just bought a new Dewalt 18v cordless drill and noticed two things that I don't understand. I can see electric sparks inside the housing when it is running. It is inside and can be seen through the vent holes. It also makes a "clunk" sound and feel when it stops, almost like it has a brake on it. Are these two things normal or should I return it? Thanks for "clue me in" if you can offer any information.

Yes this is normal the spark keeps motor from stalling out by taking away the friction spark by making own spark
the clunk is the drill brake so you dont brake your hand when screw goes in all the way unlike old drills that kept going even when your hand was attached to it

As for the clung sound and feel when you stop. there is a brake build in the dewalt because when the trigger is not pressed you cant turn the drill motor, i know this because i just broke my brake when i was changing the chuck. my drill still works but there is no brake now. the brake came in handy when your battery got week you let go of the trigger and turn the drill by hand to finishing setting a screw.

sparking on any portable tool is normal. I don't understand what shaggyrat said about the sparking, but we'll let it just go at that. the drill uses a johnson motor and the gear train is a planetary gear drive. the clunk is the play in between the drive gear and the first planetary drive. the drive is built up over several stages inside so you can get the needed torque to drive screws etc.

You have burned out the drill motor, it is shorted, the battery smoked due to a direct short, one thing I don't understand why the thermal limiter didn't trip in battery pack, I would contact manufacturer and try to get hem to buy you a new drill.
