Question about Gateway FPD2185W 21 in. LCD Television

Screen only stays on for 1 sec

I've got a Gateway FPD2185W now for about 2yrs. A few weeks ago the screen started to occasionally start to flicker then go black. Hit the power button and everything came back fine. This went on for about a week getting more frequent till it no longer came back on. So now when I turn the power on I get the Gateway splash screen for 1 sec and then it goes black. Blue power light still stays on. If I soft cycle the power it just does the same thing again. I also noticed that if I have no video cable attached the power light goes to amber after about 10sec as would be normal if no input found. But then if I hit the Input button on the side, the screen comes on to show the different input menu, but again it goes black after 1 sec.

After reading through all the different posts here I discovered the cap issue and replaced all 8 caps with 105*C 470uF 50V. No change. BTW the caps I pulled off had no visible signs of defect. So it was a do no harm. Any suggestions? Almost sounds like something is bad in the high voltage section or one of the regulators preventing the florescent backlight from firing up. Thanks for any help....

Have the same problem, shows the boot screen for about a sec. then blank, blue button stays blue, computer boots to windows xp, but no picture. I had already replace the 8 caps as suggested elsewhere, it gave me at least the turn on for the one second. But still need more help. Unbelievable how hard to get help for this monitor. Gateway refused to help, couldn't even give me a name for a authorized service center/dealer. Liked the monitor, HATE the company. Filed BBC complaint against them. Anyone else that gets schematics, fixes or whatever, I would love to hear from!!! rklkeys@hotmail.com

I had the same exact problem with this monitor. I had to replace it (different brand of course. I will NEVER buy gateway again). Live and learn I suppose.

    where can i get these 560uf 25volt

Same problem. Gateway even admitted the monitor should last a minimum of 5 and up to 12 or more years, and that my unit was definitely defective. However, as it was 6 months out of warranty, Gateway refused to help. In fact, Gateway representatives, by phone and email, refused to to let me speak to a manager; they just repeated the same message, no warranty, no service. One word to describe Gateway - unprincipled. Even the company I bought the unit from was so disgusted by Gateway, that they tried to advocate for me (huge company, major buying power). Guess what? Gateway gave them the shaft too. Big disappointment. Gateway has no interest in customer service, or building a loyal customer base.

Assuming you changed all the caps and did it correctly.
IF you get flickering, It could be a transistor on the inverter board.
OR !!! and probably more likely,
It could be one of the bulbs in the lcd itself is failing. It only takes one bad bulb to stop an inverter from firing up !! You can check them one at a time if you have another working monitor.
If you do unplug a good bulb from the good monitor and try each of the questionable ones, one at a time.
Doesn't have to be a gateway monitor to test it, just needs the same backlight plug.

First change all 8 capacitors you can go with 560uf 25volt also
then if your monitor stays on 1 second and turn black
open again and check if their is no short circuit on triacks and diodes if not then
solder all points around the capacitor area including the triacks transistors diodes as much as possible

if you do it will work just fine

I just repaired exact same monitor just 5 minutes ago

I have a Panasonic Quintrix F TV. About 6 weeks ago the tv screen started displaying

Rule out the signal source by seeing if same issue when a DVD etc is used.

Usually a wave like motion from bottom to top is either signal related or a problem in the power supply (wave moves from bottom to top suggests that).

If not on rear inputs (A/V) it is not the power supply.

Model number is not indicated here and might be helpful.

Monitor works intermittently

Hi Michael, it does sound like the monitor then. The most likely cause is bad capacitors in the power supply. Typically a cheap repair but you do have to solder and such. Unless you have to have a very expensive monitor its probably better to just replace it since basic monitors are so cheap these days. Good luck.

The backlight or inverter is going out on your screen.
Eventually it will just stay dark. You will need to replace one of the two if plan on keeping monitor.

Well, this problem is going to only get worse. You can probably send it back to the manufacturer if you still have a warantee, but if you can't just buy a new monitor.
