Question about Whirlpool ET8MTKX Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Whirlpool et8mtkx gets too cold, freezing

It seems as though the refrigerator runs constantly, regardless if the control is set to warm , cold , coldest. the unit is freezing everything that is left in the refrig regardless of setting. it seems that the only thing that works is to set the the control to off and turn back on from time to time manualy. what troubleshooting steps should i take to determine how to repair? From what i have read it seems as though the thermostat may be bad, but is there any way to test before replacing and also are there any other things that i can check/test before coming to the conclusion that the thermostat is bad? Thank You, Renato L.

I am having the same problem with my Whirlpool full refrigerator (No freezer). I've replaced the thermostat but still have the problem. The circulation fan is working fine. I'm not certain what to try next. I've talked with a repair shop. Those were the two ideas they gave me.

Ok renato i believe in teaching so here is refrigeration 101 first the freezer does all the colling for the whole unit there is nothing in the refrigerator that cools its control runs a damper door like on a wood stove or fireplace at what we call the mid point setting the middle point the fridge should be about 35to40 degrees food starts spoiling at 42 the freezer should be about -8 to 2degrees the freezer has the only true thermostat that controls the compressor it has a cut in cut out temp and they are filled with freon like the unit and are subject to leaks at which time they malfunction now you can check the freezer for temp at mid point setting if its way below 8 degrees replace the freezer side thermostat which im betting is bad any way and not cutting out now blambnm email me at b4829@yahoo.com and we will talk ive never seen a whirl pool unit with out a freezer so you must be in another country im in the usa but we can fix yours too ill just need more info ok

Is the fan running? check to see if the compressor is running, and if it is, the fan should be on. If the fan is on, and the freezer is not working, and the fridge is working, but not as well as normal. You may have a sealed system issue and that's a pretty serious issue. Add more details if you need further advice!

Refrigerator freezes

Sounds like might be the Temperature Control Thermostat or some sensor in the circuitry telling the compressor and cooling parts to keep running because it thinks it isn't cold enough. There is probably a circulation fan to blow the cold air through the damper and it may not shut off either, conveying too much cold thermal conduction through ducting and all frig parts, regardless of damper being closed or open. With the temperature set on low, do the compressor and fans ever shut off once cold temperatures are attained? Freezer should be 0 or lower, frig 35-40.

Too cold

If the unit seems to be running non stop, you may have a bad cold temp control. If you have ice cream in freezer, it will likely be rock hard, that you need a chisel to scoop. if your ice cream is ok, its likely not the temp control. On your GE, in the fresh food section, do you have a canopy on the ceiling of fridge, and likely covers the whole top back portion of your fridge? If you do, there is a damper door inside, that breaks off its hinge, and stays wide open, allowing cold air from freezer to constantly be pulled into fridge, freezing food. If you do have this canopy, it will need to be replaced, as you cannot reattach the damper to its hinge.

Refrigerators not getting cold all of a sudden

if just the refrigerator is not getting cool, check the cold control in the refrigerator and make sure its opening the damper door between the refrigerator and freezer to let cold air in from freezer,if the whole unit is not cooling i.e. refrigerator and freezer compartments, then the compressor isn't operating and the rtc overload contactor on the compressor is defective, its mounted on the compressors side and you unplug it to replace it,when its removed, shake it,if it rattles when shook this is a good sign its bad

My refrigerator keeps freezing on the refrigerator side

your damper door is frozen fully open between the refrigerator and freezer compartments and letting in too much cold air even though the temp setting is set on warmest setting, defrost it and then adjust the cold control and see if it moves again,if it freezes often the door seals may be letting in warm air from outside, condensing and freezing things up

Freezer not freezing properly

You have a manual defrost freezer . Ice build up of over 1/2" can act like insulation on wires . If you have no frost build up , and runs constantly , then compressor or refrigerant leak is the problem . Advise to replace freezer . Only 2 parts on manual defrost freezer...compressor and cold control . Compressor will not run if bad cold control . If you have a leak , very expensive to have repaired .

sounds like might be a cold control issue, not cyclying on/off. if correct you dairy is good judge, so id assume that your ice cream is FROZEN SOLID. try turning down refrig temp control this will reduse run time(if working at all)
