i guess i need to put all the info in again. I have a nikkor 3x optical zoom lens. It came with the camera. It is the only lens. When I turn the camera on the lens comes out 5 times with a buzz sound each time and then it retracts for good and a message in the window on the back say lens error in red with an exclamation point underneath.

I was working with a Japanese person I think. I have paid another $9.99. Please help.

I just sent the problem before you just sent me your question. We overlapped. Sorry. Do you need more info? Oh, the camera is a Nikon Coolpix 7.1 megapixels vr&iso 1000

  • jroschy Jun 05, 2008

My reply wouldn't go. Thank you for helping me. I bought the camera on a cruise last July. I'll look for the receipt. Here is a little more info. The three part zoom comes all the way out and buzzes and goes back in 5 times. There is a grinding noise for a second or two with each in and out. I will accept if this doesn't help.

It is possible that the lens is not extending fully. Try carefully pulling on the lens and slightly twisting it clockwise while turning the camera on. The best
way I have found to do this is to get your fingernail under the lens
opening and gently pull. See attached picture.

Should that not work, try smacking the camera onto your palm with moderate force.

If even that does not work, you may have to dismantle the camera and manually try forcing the lens. (If your camera is under warranty, then dont attempt this. Simply take it back to the store you purchased it from and ask for a replacement)..
Got this from another forum, by the way:

"I removed the entire case, front & back, by unscrewing 7 phillips screws ( note different
threads on one screw, & different length on the R side.

Unplug 1 data cable ( slide the black friction retainer ~1mm towards the cable on each
side) to completely remove the back cover.

I just pulled out one short cable near the ON/OFF switch, and left 2 more wires attached to
the front of the case, but with enough play to rotate the front cover to one side.

In retrospect, I may have been able to just partially open the front half of the case, just
enough to access the tiny drive motor.

The drive motor was located just under the serial number label.

Try removing the 4 screws on the L & R sides of the case (note different lengths) and just
the forward 1 of the 3 screws surrounding the tripod mount.

You may be able to crack the case bottom and reveal the round motor, about the diameter
of a AA battery. Just towards the left (nearest) side in front of the motor, there is a small
rectangular (1mmx5mm?) opening where I could reach in with a small screw driver and
laboriously rotate, 1/4 turn at a time, what looks like small fan shaped plastic tabs
attached to the drive shaft ( acting as a flywheel?). At first it was slightly resistant to
turning, but soon freed up. I continued to turn the shaft MANY TIMES in a direction AWAY
from the front of the lens until the lens appeared fully retracted."

BTW, you can get the other post refunded by posting to premium.support@fixya.com and you could get a refund, based on Fixya's discretion.

Well, hope that helps! If I can assist you further, please post back. If not, I'd appreciate it if you could "Accept" this solution, if it works.

If you are confident about the dismantling bit, it should help. It looks like the lens is not getting 'locked' in the extended position, indicating a fault with the motor/gear.

However, if you do find the receipt, please dont attempt this, and get it replaced/fixed under warranty.

Nikon s200 when camera turned on lens error

You may have a jammed lens assy. When the camera is turned on, camera go through a few stages of processing to be ready to take picutre and if the lens does not respond mechanically, it will give you a lens error. Lens jams due to sand or impact (even unnoticable light impact). If the lens is extended out you can somehow grab the lens barrel lightly with two fingers while turning the power on and nudge it side by side. If this did not help, take it to a reliable local technician for a diagnostic(should be free). Good luck. -james

Nikon S200 Lens stuck inside

I had the same issue with my S210, so after reading other people's advice to send it in to Nikon and since that was going to probably cost me as much as the camera itself I figured it wouldn't hurt to try a little something. The lens on mine was a hair off center or had been pushed in on one side (barely - looking at yours you may be able to tell which side) - mine was in my purse also. So, I took my handy dandy skinny prying instrument (normal kitchen butter knife) took the battery out to make it try to open again, then when I popped the battery in as the lens tried to push out I pried the side I thought was a little lower back towards center...I heard a little pop and it worked! The lens came all of the way out and it's all good.

So, use gentle hands and try if you want, but don't think I warranty this!

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced.

He took the battery out of my camera and press the off and on button for a while. Then he put the battery back in the camera and press the on button. The lens of the camera was now going inside en outside and inside and outside with a strange noise. And also on the screen stood lens error. Okey, the lens is inside the camera.
