Question about Hitachi TravelStar DK23EB Series DK23EB-40 40 GB Hard Drive
This big dummy was trying to reinstall windows xp on my Inspiron
8500 laptop. I couldn't do it because the version I had was newer than
the disk I was using. After doing some research I saw that I would have
to clean the hard disk. I used a program called killdisk and apparently
did something wrong because now nothing will load. Here are the things
I have tried:
I have tried the windows xp reinstallation CD
I have tried the Dell Tools CD for reinstalling Dell installed software
I have tried the Drivers, utilities and applications CD
I have tried the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools CD
I have tried the Killdisk recovery CD
None of these will boot up. The cd drive lights up and seems to read the disk, but then shuts down and does nothing. I have searched and searched for some kind of recovery cd on the dell website, but couldn't find one. I did find the website that sells recovery cds http://www.recovery-cds.com/laptop/product.asp?product=831&ph=search&keywords=dell,recovery,cd,disk&recor=76&SearchFor=any&PT_ID=all
but I don't know if that is the right one. Have I fried my hard disk? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Check to make sure that your Inspiron is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive.
It sounds like your laptop is trying to boot from the (now erased) hard drive first, finds that it can't, then stops without ever checking the CD-ROM drive for boot media.
At startup, hit F2 to go into the BIOS settings. Look for the "Boot Order" section. Make sure that your CD drive is listed first, then your hard drive.
Save your changes, and reboot with the WinXP installation CD in your drive. Now your laptop should boot from the CD and begin installation.
