E74: I/O Hardware Error - HSIO related, could be crc error, or many things: There is high chance it's a scalier chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. Microsoft covers this error under their 3-year warranty, this is available to anyone who hasn't modified their console. contact MS to get a free replacement console before attempting to fix this yourself. Failing that this error In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement.

In regards to your issue with the E74 issue this is mainly stating that there is a problem with the Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) on the XBOX 360. In most cases it is because the system got over heated.

Now if your system is less than 3 years old from the date of manufacture on the back of the XBOX 360 then I would recommend that you contact Microsoft because they extended the warranty for this issue for 3 years.

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/contact.aspx

Phone numbers
Toll free: (800) 4MY-XBOX
Direct dial: (425) 635-7180

Note this issue would not have anything to do with the issue you are having with the ROM drive. On the plus side if you are still covered under the E74 error warranty you will most likely get your ROM drive replaced too.

Hope this helps

Got on red light,E74

An E74 error is when the lower-right quadrant of the ring piece indicator flashes red and displays an error message in multiple languages: "E74 System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support". The error is caused when there's a video problem with the Xbox's hardware scaler chip being damaged. As of April 14, 2009, the E74 error is now covered by the three-year extended warranty.

One red light and E74

You see the lower-right quadrant of the Ring of Light flash red on the front of your Xbox 360 console. You also receive the following error message in multiple languages on your television screen or display: E74. System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support.

You will see the following indicator on the front panel of your Xbox 360 console, which will repeatedly flash on and off:

If one red light is flashing and you see a different error message or code than the one listed above, or you don’t see an error message or code, your console may be experiencing a different issue. If this is the case, please refer to the “References/Links” section at the bottom of this article. 1. Turn off the console, disconnect all the cables, and then reconnect all the cables. Turn the console back on.
  2. Turn off the console, and then disconnect any accessories that are connected. For example, disconnect any Xbox 360 controllers, Xbox 360 Memory Units, and the Xbox 360 Hard Drive. With the accessories disconnected, restart the console to see whether the problem still occurs. This can help you determine whether the console or an accessory is experiencing the problem. If you determine that an accessory is consistently causing the error, try borrowing another accessory of the same type and testing again using that accessory.
  3. If you continue to experience this problem, contact Xbox Customer Service.

Note If the agent cannot help you resolve this issue, you may have to return the console to Microsoft for repair.

E74 is the error code, call xbox (1800-4MY-XBOX) and inform them of this error.
If you have voided your warranty, you will have to resort to buying a new 360 or a new motherboard.

- Hardware Failure
The Specific Type of hardware failure can be determined by the error code displayed on the screen.
If the screen is blank or you would like additional information follow the instructions for determining the secondary error code in the section below

E64: (not yet known)

E65: DVD Drive Error.... DVD Timeout, Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc.

E67: Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

E68: Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it, This can also be caused by a Hard Drive Eprom Error.

E69: Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

E71: (not yet known)

E73: (not yet known)

E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (could also be a problem with the encoder chip)

E79: Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

=============================

--==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code
  • Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
  • Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
  • The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
  • Release the eject button and press it again.
  • The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
  • Release the eject button and press it again.
  • The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
  • Release the eject button and press it again.
  • The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
  • Release the eject button and press it again.
  • The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:
  • All four lights flashing - 0
  • One light flashing - 1
  • Two Lights flashing - 2
  • Three lights flashing - 3

E74 one blinking relight

Ok. You have a serious problem that you CAN NOT fix, but DO NOT FEAR! Microsoft has come out and said that if you have red lights that flash, more commonly known as "Red Rings of Death", they will send you another system. So all you need to do, is contact Microsoft and tell them your problem. The e74 error should say in screen "Hardware malfuction" because I had the same thing before. So don't worry about it and just talk to Microsoft. Good luck!

P.S. If you bought it from somewhere popular like Walmart somewhat recently, they will also take it back for you because that is what I did. Mine got the e74 error within the first month and I just sent it back to Walmart and got a 100% refund!
