I just recieved a call from samsung and there is one problem if you had charger problems in the past this is whats happening. if your pins are smashed it is creating a shortcircut in the phone. the phone thinks its on the charger with no battery. so it will constantly flash the verizon screen. unfortunally there is no way for them to repair it. so you have to buy a new phone.

the damage is irreversable.

Battery went dead

Most likely you have a bad battery you can check by taking out the battery and feeling on it if it is flat than its good if it has a bump on it than it is no good.

Phone dead

I am guessing heat can only come from discharging the battery in a non-intentional way. Short circuit or something internal.

Did you plug it into something besides the connector it came with?
An FM transmitter for the iPod killed mine.
Hard reset, wall charging, USB charge, iTunes restore, replaced the battery ... still dead.
Considering how hot it gets, (could be a fire hazard?) surprised Apple doesn't issue a notice or warning.

Caveat emptor, going back to Motorola.
