Common problem with larger size drives, windows is trying to populate the entire contents of the drive at once. try to keep single files out of the root drive (aka put your files in folders) that way when you access the drive it will just populate a bunch of folders instead of a million individual files

> Zone Alarm free firewall and Avast antivirus have been installed on both computers

Your router is already acting as a "firewall" to block "unsolicited" traffic from reaching the computers on your LAN. So, unless you use Zone Alarm to block "outgoing" connections
(such as a computer-virus would try to make when "calling-home", there's little benefit
to using the Zone Alarm software.

> If I use Internet explorer to connect to http://myname.dyndns.org, Internet Explorer does connect successfully to the network. However, it invites me to enter the username and password for my Buffalo WBMR-G54 router - not for the storage drive.

While you are "forwarding" TCP port 21, you are not "forwarding" TCP port 80 (as used by the 'http://' protocol). So, when you connect from the Internet to your "public" IP-address, it is the router that responds, rather than one of your computers inside your LAN.

IMHO, it is "bad" that your router's web-interface is "exposed" to attacks from the Internet.
Either "forward" TCP port 80, or configure the router to use a _different_ port number for "remote management".

> If I enter the Router user name and password, that allows me to access the Router menus via the Internet, which confirms that my account at DynDns has translated the IP address successfully.

Correct. Hopefully, you're the only one who knows the correct username/password, and there is nobody that is doing "brute-force" attacks on your router, trying to login to "hijack" your router.

> if I use Internet Explorer or FileZilla to access ftp://myname.dyndns.org, I cannot connect to the router

Correct. The 'ftp://' protocol uses TCP port 21, which the router is "forwarding" to one of the computers on your LAN.

> or the storage drive - so I cannot access any of my files remotely.
> FileZilla reports -Status: Resolving address of bob1944.dyndns.org
> Status: Connecting to 78.144.xxx.xxx:21...
> Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message

So far, so good.

Is FileZilla expecting a "specific" content in that "welcome" message, or will "any" response be "close-enough" ?

On a computer on the Internet, open a command-line prompt:

Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
Enter FTP bob1944.dyndns.org
Press Enter
Do you get a "connecting" message?
Do you get a "connected" message?
Do you see the "welcome" message?

Note that the FTP protocol usually uses _two_ ports for File Transfer:

* port 21 for "control" (sending/receiving commands/responses)
* a "random" port for "data" transfers (including directory-listings)

It's this "random" port that your router is not forwarding.

However, some FTP-clients (probably including FileZilla) and some FTP-servers
support "passive" mode, where both the "control" and the "data" connections "share" port 21.

So, configure FileZilla to use "passive" mode, and _hope_ that your FTP-server supports "passive" mode.

WD & Seagate ext HDD not getting connected toBelkins N+ router

hmmm..

Start > Run > devmgmt.msc

Check if there are some errors shown under USB devices..

Also try changing the USB ports...

Use the ports in back of ur CPU.

Also check

Start > run > diskmgmt.msc to see if your device / Hard disk is listed there.

Assign a drive letter to the drive if no letter like e:, f: etc is assigned to it.

WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

If I understand correctly ... You have not connected the drive to a computer.

If I am not mistaken the WD My Book has preinstalled backup software installed on it. It very well might also have a power down built as part of that programming. Try attaching it to a computer to verify this.

Assuming the backup software needs blank drive to work correctly I would first access the drive select all and delete anything you find (if you know how to unhide hidden files do that before you select and delete all) ... As a 2nd option I would just reformat the drive.

Hope that helps....

I have a work around for this.

In the detail of the Belkin manuals it says you can attach up to 4 USB storage devices via a USB HUB.

I had an old Hub so I Connected the HUB to the router and the Maxtor to the HUB --- It worked :-) It came up in a few seconds.

At first I powered the HUB but later took the power out of the hub and it still worked ;-} However when I used a different HUB it would not work without power to the HUB.

The HUB I use is an old Belkin 4 port Tetra Hub. The newer 7 port Belkin HUB (5 Rear 2 Top) only worked with the HUB powered.

Hope this helps untill Belkin Upgrade the Router sofrtare.

This is not as complicated as it may sound. You don't need the manager. Bring up the "run" window (XP - Start - Run / Vista Alt-R). Enter the following address [\\192.168.2.1] press enter. The drive will show up. Right click on it and select Map Network Drive. You can then uninstall the useless program from Belkin.

My two front usb ports cant read usb hard drives

Some external USB drives require external power sources. Typically this is done either with an external power supply that connects to the drive or a second USB cable that connects to the drive and a second usb port on the pc. I have even seen one drive that comes with a Y cable. one end goes to the drive and the 2 usb plugs go to the pc.

Trying to connect a Mybook 1Tb network drive to N1 Vision

Hi! I have an N1 Vision with similar problems. I have done some research and found that we are not alone with this issue! Two solutions are possible: 1) If yours is version 1 (1000) of the machine, Belkin recommends that it be swapped out for version 2, which apparently has firmware/hardware changes that fix this (unverified; it would seem to me that this would require a whole new DHCP approach) and 2) I've found that if you go through the process of unplugging the device for 2 minutes, replugging it and then refreshing the DHCP table, after between 1 and 5 iterations, the device should appear. I'd also advise you to shut down (for troubleshooting) the software firewall in the router (you'll still have the NAT firewall), that might eliminate a problem/conflict somewhere in your network!

Good luck and let me know if this helps!

Problems with speed and local ftp on D-LINK DI-524

you may have to open the port that opensuse uses in your routers settings, this will probably be called something similair to virtual servers or within the firewall settings, you will have to enter the port number that the programme uses and allocate the number against the ip address of the pc that is connecting. The fact that you have 3 cards in one pc may confuse matters for the router,so probably dissabling two of them may prove to be another solution to the problem
