Seagate go flex 500gb the file or directory is currupted and unreadable

when it shows corrupted you need not understand that it is no longer for use.you can use it. it happened because of any antivirus that has affected the file system and the file is unrepairable.so what should you do now? you can do two things if you don't feel sorrowful to lose the data that the portable hard drive contained.Indeed you have to feel sorry for it.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The two ways are:1> insert it into a machine running linux based operating system and delete the files which you dont know (i mean which you are seeing new to exist.those are the virus).Else if you have problem in sorting out you can just format it.even if you delete the virus and still the portable hard drive is said to be corrupted by windows you need to format it in any linux based operating system.
2> zero-fill your hard drive.
you can try the first option at first and the second option if you are unsuccessful.i mentioned that you have to a Linux based system because when windows shows that it is corrupted,it will certainly not format the drive.

Currupted and unreadable.

Goto control Panel /admin tools/computer management then **** management. There you will see your drive, right click it and choose change drive letter and paths now call it Z or whatever you choose. See if it will read now if not try plugging it into another PC. If all this fails i think a format is only option but choose quick format. 99% of data is still recoverable using recovery software. Good luck from Scott

My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

Seagate Barracuda 160GB hard drive

Hard Drives are spun by powerful magnets. Over time the polarity of the magnet can degrade, causing the disc to wobble and generally be unreadable by the laser. IF you are very skilled in disc repair you can replace the internal components of the drive. You must understand though a single piece of dust will render a portion of the disc unreadable. If you don't know what you are doing, do not attempt to take apart the drive. Lots of techs in the computer repair industry call that noise you are hearing the click of death. You're better off replacing the drive than taking it apart and purchasing new internals for it. It's simply not worth it. FYI, I've had hard drives die after a single week of use, there are also hard drives that were made 15 years ago that still work fine. In recent months it's been proven that almost all mechanical hard drive failures happen due to magnets losing polarity on a microscopic level. Newer hard drives in years to come will likely be made to combat this, but thats still a while away.
