You probably have a shorted horizontal out put transistor and your TV is going into high voltage shutdown mode. The horizontal is located by the fly back on a metal heat sink.

It varies as to what is actually making the TV shut down. Shorting the connectors on the A.C. plug have nothing to do with it turning back on. Its just the fact you are unpugging it for a few moments.
It seems as though the bulb(s) in your unit are about to go out. This is repairable/replaceable by calling your manufacturer. If you are still under warranty they can help you by possibly troubleshooting/replacement/referrals.
t does sound like a bulb problem, either its over heating and shutting
off to protect itself, or its already shot. Give a TV repair shop a
call and see if they can give you an approximate price, then decide to
ditch or repair it.
Offhand it would appear that the VCR section of the combo unit would require a bit of cleaning. Specifically, head cleaning. The easiest approach is to use a VHS tape head cleaner.
The other post of "tv turns on then 5 seconds later shuts off" would be the auto-protect kicking in. This indicates that a likely hardware fault exists. Try to initially reset the unit by unplugging from the mains for an extended period. Otherwise it would require opening the unit for voltage measurement/diagnosis.

I have the same issue with mine and have a solution that sometimes works. I had a repair guy come to check it out and he powered off the TV so that the red light was no longer blinking, then he unplugged the TV for about 30 seconds or so and then plugged it back in. He then turned on the TV and it worked. He said it would cost about $400 to fix the issue (some circuit or something). I have since expeerienced the on/off problem (due to power outage) and now I cannot get the TV to work. But at least give this solution a try and please post to let me know if it worked or not. Same problem. The power button does not work. The volume and channel buttons turn the tv on. the tv then shuts its self off 15 seconds later. the red light blinks in second intervals while this happens.
