Question about Denon AVR-1906 Receiver

4 Answers

Denon AVR-1906 Receiver is hooked up to Sony DVD player with optical cable, and 5.1 speaker system (Gallo Nucleus Micro). When DVD or CD input is set to "anolog" stereo, sound is fine, but when set to 5 channel stereo or Dolby ProLocic (digital) for movies, there is so much interference or "static" noise that it is unusable. I tried moving the DVD player and receiver apart, and to different locations in the room, and also connected with coax cable instead, but no difference. Am I doing something wrong, or is the receiver defect?

Thanks. Believe me, I know this manual pretty much inside-out by now. Is there anything specific I should look at?

  • JustinCarl Jun 04, 2008

Any movie DVD or music CD is doing the same thing. It works fine if I connect the DVD player just with stereo component cables or if I keep the setting on plain "stereo". Any surround sound setting creates the same problem. Other players (e.g. ipod) connected in analog mode work fine as well.

  • JustinCarl Jun 07, 2008

I tried the speakers separately, no difference. I left the receiver off overnight and realized that it will work fine after turning it back on, but after running for about 1/2 hour of DVD playing, the crackling noise starts and then gets more frequent. After some hours the loud static noise will be constant, even if the DVD player is turned off. I saw today that the manufacturer's seal on the chassis was broken, so I assume somebody "worked" on this unit (I bought it on ebay, supposedly in perfect and tested working condition.)

It sounds like the receiver has a loose internal or unprotected part causing interference most likely a defect, I would take it back and get a different one if you can and then let us know if the same thing happens. If it does then you have other problems but I think that you just have a defective unit. Let me know how this goes and if you need further help, just ask

good luck

If two different cables are doing the same thing, It would most likely be internal and not something you want to try and fix, what else it could be are the speakers causing this, try hooking up only one speaker at a time and see if you get this problem

So obviously some component isn't able to handle the heat after a while in the circuitry. Start by checking the board and power supply and anything that may have been replaced

The DVD's that your are playing , check whether they are made to support sounds.
If not , then you will face noise problems with the DVD
Try to play other DVD as well

I cant connect my Denon avr 682 to my pc via optical??

I would change your setting on your receiver to digital. its probably on analog. look for a button that says that. You might have to change your input have a look at the rear and see if it says, DVD optical or CD and choose that input.

Denon AVR 2800 digital hookup to PS3

If your TV has an HDMI input, hook up the PS3 w/an HDMI cable to the TV. This will give you a high def picture (set up the PS3 to output the max resolution your TV displays). That will take care of the video side.

Next hook up an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver. In the PS3 menu, you have to change the audio settings to output the sound via the optical cable.

Finally to get sound out of the receiver to the speakers, you have to setup the receiver source input. For example if you setup the PS3 to play thru "VCR" input, then you have to make sure the VCR input is setup to use either optical 1 or optical 2 for sound (whichever one you have the optical cable plugged in from the PS3).
  • I found this solution on a different site... it worked for me. I needed to change the sound settings in my ps3 to optical... then i selected dolby 5.1.... that took care of my sound.

No sound fom optical input

Do you have your TV hooked up, so you can see the AVR-4800 system menu on its screen (if not, see the manual). You need to go down to the digital input menu item where you associate each component with its input source, whether it is coax, optical 1, optical 2, ..., etc.

No HDMI video output from AVR-588 receiver to plasma TV ???

the avr-588 apparently cannot carry sound via hdmi - don't know why; just what i found out from the geek squad at best buy; solved the problem by connecting optical cable from cable box to receiver; be sure to change the input on the receiver for opt-2 (system setup >2 inputs) to correlate with tv
