Goto start
Open control panel
Open network connection (XP)
Right click on Local Area connection
Goto properties
click on Internet protocol TCP/IP
Click on properties
Try to change the Ip address on that window
If it does not make any difference then TRy to disable the firewall that is installed on the computer.

Getting low or no connectivity error when trying to connect laptop and other devices to 5-port DLINK switch. Lan line going to switch is confirmed working as i'm able to plug the laptop and other devices...

please change the cable which is connecting your laptop to D-Link DES 1005 Ethernet Switch.

This error appears when you have either a bad cable or bad switch or NIC card on Laptop.
As you have Laptop and other devices and getting the same error , so i suspect issue with the cable.

Please use a new Straight LAN cable.

How to connect 4computers with Swith or Hub

A switch or hub isn't very complicated. The primary benefits are connecting more than 1 computer and/or increasing the range of your wired network.
On the back of your switch, all you do is plug in each computer using an ethernet cable, plug in the switch power supply, and turn it on.The only caveat being if you're using 1 PC to connect to the internet,it should probably be plugged into port #1.It probably doesn't matter, but I'm not familiar with your brand of switch.
If this helps, would you please rate my post?
Thanks

HOW TO LINK LAPTOP TO PC

If you wish to connect your laptop to your PC for sharing the resources and files. You can use Either a Wireless network or Ethernet adapter. Since you are looking for a small setup (I guess so). You can configure an ad hoc network.
Most of the latest laptops comes with a Wireless card and and ethernet card. However in the case of PC's there might not be a wireless card. If you are looking for portability and working from distances (say from the other room) then you can buy a wireless card for your pc and setup a small wireless network.
Okey let us see how to setup an ethernet connection (it's a wired connection between your pc and laptop to enable networking between them)
You need to make sure both your computers have an ethernet port and you need a Crossover cable to connect between them (get at least 3 meters so that it will be more comfortable.)
86de892.jpeg

A similar port will be there in your laptop too. Connect your crossover cable to both pc and the laptop (you can buy a cross over cable from most of the local computer shops).
Now you need to setup the ip addresses for both the computers.
Let's set 192.168.1.1 for your laptop and let's use the same ip as a gateway. We will be using 192.168.1.2 as the ip address for your pc and the same gateway (192.168.1.1). Now let's see how to setup IP Addresses
With the following instructions you can fill the above values in both the laptop and pc by individually repeating these instructions given below. Once you set both the ip addressess and gateways your network is ready to go. (You don't have to worry about the dns addresses since we are setting up a small network of two computers)
In your case the connection name will be unknown or something like that where as in the image it is Internet.
If you are on Windows Vista or Higher, Go to Control Panel (Start menu -> Control Panel)then click onNetwork and Sharing Center and you can see your active connection there; click on the View Status

Then a new dialog box will appear; click on the Properties button there

once you have in the properties dialog box; double click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

Now you will get a new dialog box where you can insert your ip address, gateway and dns.

Now you are all set and ready to go.

I am trying to setup up a D-Link DES-1016D, 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch to allow 5 laptops to connect, 1 cat 5 is connected to another switch that will provide these 5 laptops internet how can i do this? I...

The Simplest Way of doing this is this:

You will need just 1 switch and 5 Straight-Through cables.

(This is Provided that your laptop will connect to the internet through another method. e.g (Though a USB Modem or WIFI) ).

Connect the Main laptop to the internet through either a USB Modem or a WIFI.

Next, Connect a straight-through cable to the LAN Port of the laptop, and the other end to one of the ports of the switch.

On the network connections page, right-click on the ethernet adapter, go to TCP/IP, and give the laptop a static IP-Address, e.g 192.168.0.1 and Subnet 255.255.255.0

For the other laptops, connect each one of them to the switch using the straight-through cables, and on their ethernet adapter TCP/IP Properties, give them different IP Adresses, but in the same subnet. e.g

192.168.0.2 and 255.255.255.0 for the 1st one
192.168.0.3 and 255.255.255.0 for the 2nd one
192.168.0.4 and 255.255.255.0 for the 3rd one, ....and so on.

Next, in the default gateway for these other laptops, put the IP-Address of the First laptop that is connected to the internet. i.e 192.168.0.1.

Also repeat the same IP Address of the 1st laptop in the Preferred DNS Server for these other ones.

Next, setup home or office network on all of them,

follow on-screen instructions and when you get to the place where you have to select the type of network setup, Just select :

"This computer connects directly to the internet........" for the 1st laptop,

For the others, select : " This Computer Connect through a residential gateway or other computer on my network.".

Then give them all the same workgroup name, and accept file and printer sharing for all of them.

In case you are using Windows Vista.
The only different things include:
When you get to the TCP/IP Place, select TCP/IPv4 and Not TCP/IPv6.

Also, When you are changing the workgroup, all you need to do is to right-click on My Computer Icon, then Properties then go to Advanced, then Select Computer Name, and change the workgroup from there and restart the computer.

What I have told you is a typical, very easy network setup, and I do hope it helps you out.

Keep me posted about the problem.

Hope it helps you out.
Good luck

Lost connection between switch and hub - LED flashes every 5 secs

You say you have the same problem when you connect the cable directly from router to laptop, so it apparently is not a hub problem. That leaves the router and the cable. You're fortunate in having a working system on the other port. Why not try swapping pieces to see which is the failed piece? For example, what if you swap the ports for the cables? If it's a router problem, then the "bad" cable should work when in the other port. What if you swap cables? That would reveal a bad cable. Finally, swapping computers would show a computer configuration problem, such as the connection not being set to automatic.

PC1 may have a defective NIC card. Also, verify that PC1's NIC card is using an up-to-date driver and that it's interface speed and duplex settings are set to auto-negotiate.
