Question about Pentax Optio 30 Digital Camera

Won't record pictures

My camera powers up, does everything it should do, except, store any pictures taken onto the chip. This started a few weeks ago as once in awhile not recording, now it records nothing at all. My chip was formatted, the camera is three years old, and has never been misused or abused.

Ours was doing the same thing from time to time. Sometimes when we took out the memory card and reinstalled it, it started working again. Tonight that wouldn't work either. Then we found the problem ! The memory card was locking. There is a little switch on the memory card. Lock it then unlock it again. That worked.

A few weeks ago, shortly after I'd taken a pic, the lens refused to retract and the camera switched off. It has never been dropped or had anything spilled on it. Strangely, when I press the button...

Sounds like a lens error. Look for sand particles around the gaps of the lens barrel (a single particle can jam it). Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

When looking at the display shows wavy lines - same happens when you take a photo. But the display shows previous pictures taken on the card

Many Canon Cameras that were made a couple of years ago have a faulty CCD chip. Canon will repair the problem at no charge regardless if the warranty is expired or not. They will even pay postage to ship it back. I had to send in both my PowerShot SD110 and my Powershot S500 it took about two weeks from the day i sent them in to the day they returned. They handled everything just as a good company should. Contact Canon through their website for more information. Good Luck!

Shutter problem

I have an Optio 330 too. Have had it since Feb 2002 (second owner) and taken over 5000 shots. I experienced something similar earlier this year: when i pressed the "on" button, the lens would extend, then there would be a jarring noise, the lens retracts, and the camera switches off. The camera couldnt work at all. I almost sent it in for servicing after a few days. However, I gave its base a firm bang squarely onto a thick floor rug. That solved it! The problem recurred one month later, i did the same thing, and it solved the problem again. Overall, the Optio is quite hardy, though it can get cranky with age. Hope it works for you.
