There is a lock release under the access panel at the bottom front of the washer. It is located next to the drain. I believe it is a ring or circular grab handle. The access panel just pops off.

My washing machine is displaying the letters "nd",

ND is no drain error code for the FAV6800A and most Maytag machines.

Is there water in the Wash Basket. If not this could be a stuck Pressure Switch. If there is water in the Wash Basket then there could be a Drain Pump issue/Drain Line clog.

If you want to DIY I can help you.

Washer overflows after cycle is complete if I am not there to push the "off" button or manually turn off the cold water.

If your machine type is a FAV6800A or FAV9800A then I believe you have a stuck pressure switch (stuck closed). You push the Off Button or pull the 120VAC to the machine to the machine and water flow stops correct?
You can verify the pressure switch operation by performing and observing the pressure switch transitions on page of 16 of the Service Manual. You should do this to confirm that the pressure switch is the issue. If you are going to DIY I can give you more detailed info. Go into Service Mode and check to see if the pressure switch signals the Control Board on the water fill points.
From the Service Manual;b5df69e.jpg
I see a low/mid fill transitions with about 3.5” of water ina empty wash basket and a Hi level transition at about 7.5” of water in the wash basket.
The fix would be to replace the pressure switch. The Pressure switch is series sensitive part to know which switch to order we need the first two digits of your serial number of your machine. Here is where the S/N is located on the machine. The range of numbers is 10 through 17.

The pressure switch is mounted on top of the drain pump on the right hand side of machine under plastic dome;

Some links for the Service Manual and parts look up.;
The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

If you want to DIY I will help. Let’s first confirm if the pressure switch is the failing componet with this basic troubleshooting…..Rich

When I switch on the machine it seems to be stuck on spin mode

Due to lack of information, the only answer I can give is that the Timer is bad. It is not indexing through the Spin cycle to the Off or Second Rinse position.

Washing machine takes in water even when switched off and now leaks.

Electric inlet valve isn't closing and needs to be replaced. Not an expensive part and easy to replace. No question about it, the valve is stuck. When not on cycle or switched off it must seal off water line completely. Unplug the machine, turn off the water line to it and call the repairman or replace the valve yourself if you're experienced in DIY.
