Notebook displays black screen with white cursor

Try running the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Select " Last know good configuration" & press Enter. Next page asking for selecting operating system, for example: windows vista or Windows XP etc. Just select the operating system & press Enter again. ( Hope your laptop showing only one operating system ). Your laptop will start normally. After the if you seen the screen dark then press FN+Right arrow in key board(>). When you press FN + ( < ) or ( >) key that's time its working for brightness controlling for screen. Now if all well then fine other wise please let me know .

I have an IBM thinkpad, an old one from work, nad it has another user name and password that I do not know. Id like to format the hard drive and install Vista on this, currently it is W2000 pro. Would you...

You don't need to get a command prompt to format the hard drive.
Just boot up with the CD as the first boot device. Press F12 just after you switch on the laptop, then select the CD as the temporary boot device, insert the Windows XP install CD in the drive.
When the install process starts and displays the partitions, delete the existing partitions, then create a new partition, and then do a full NTFS format, not a quick format.
Now ou are on your way for a new Windows install.
