Question about NetGear WGR614 Router

Re: "Not able to communicate with Primary DNS Server"

I have had this router since '94'. I have never had a problem with it. It was accidently turned off and for some reason the internet was not connected, so I started the whole process again, as if it was the first time. Which included 'reset' from the little button behind the unit.

The whole process works, step by step, until it asks me to enter the IP address and the other addresses.

Then it thinks for a while and a pop up comes up and says

"Not able to communicate with Primary DNS Server"

I have done this whole process over ten times and the same problem occurs. I checked the IP address and other in the "network & sharing" option..

Can somebody help?

Thank you for getting back to me. I was able to fix via the reset button. I didn't know the unit had one??!! lol..

I pushed the reset button, then started the process from the start, and it worked.

Thank again!!

WITH A ROUTER:

Generic Router

  1. Open the preferences for your router. Often, the preferences are set in your web browser, via a URL with numbers (example: http://192.168.0.1). You may need a password.
If you're like us, and you set the router password long ago and cannot remember it now, you can often reset the password to the manufacturer default by pressing a button on the router itself.
Or preferences may be set via specific application for your router, which you installed on your computer when you added the router.
  2. Find the DNS server settings.
Scan for the letters DNS next to a field which allows two or three sets of numbers, each broken into four groups of one to three numbers.
  3. Put in the OpenDNS server addresses, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, as your DNS server settings and save/apply.

Linksys Router

  1. Visit the router's IP address in a new browser window.
http://192.168.1.1 is the default Linksys router IP address.
  2. Enter the Network password.
The "Enter Network Password" window will appear. Skip user name and type the router's password (admin is the default password, if you haven't changed it) and click the OK button.
  3. Type in OpenDNS addresses, 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220, in Static DNS 1 and Static DNS 2 fields.
  4. Click Save Settings button.

Netgear Router

  1. Type the router's setup URL (http://www.routerlogin.net, http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1) into a web browser address bar.
http://192.168.1.1 is the default Netgear router IP address.
  2. Enter the password.
  3. Type in OpenDNS addresses, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, in Primary DNS and Secondary DNS fields.
  4. Click Apply button.
  5. Wait for the settings to be updated.

D-Link Router

  1. Visit the router's IP address (http://192.168.0.1) in a new browser window.
If you are attempting to configure a D-Link router, take note of your computer's Default Gateway IP address. The Default Gateway is the IP address of the D-Link router. By default, it should be 192.168.0.1. Most D-Link devices use the 192.168.0.X range.
  2. Enter the router password.
Note: if you have not changed the original settings, the default username is admin and the password is blank (nothing).
  3. Click on the Manual Internet Connection Setup button at the bottom.
  4. Enter the OpenDNS addresses, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, in Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server fields.

Dns failed is coming while i am trying to open internet.

Use your web browser and LOGON to your modem/router administration page (check your modem/router manual for the correct address of your router). Navigate to Broadband or Internet status and check if your modem/router has managed to acquire the following from your ISP:

1) IP Address
2) Primary DNS Server Address
3) Secondary DNS Server Address

If you don't seem to have gotten any valid addresses, please check your ADSL/DSL/Cable for any lose connections, power-off/on router and try again.

If nothing helps, please call your ISP Tech Support as the problem may be with your service provider.

How do I configure my laptops IP address to my router to get online? I'm using windows vista. I tried a few times and I can't find the window to type in the laptops IP address. How?

Follow the following steps to change your TCP and IP Settings on Windows Vista

1. Go to the Control Panel from the Start menu.
2. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center."
3. Click "Manage network connections."
4. Choose which Internet connection you would like to change if you have more than one. Right click on it and select "Properties."
5. Click the "Networking" tab.
6. Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
(Note that "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" works fine generally)
7. Click "Use the following IP Address" to enter your own IP settings.
- Enter IP address (eg. 192.168.1.125) into the box marked "IP Address, press tab "Subnet Mask" would appear automatically (255.255.255.0) and in "Default gateway." type 192.168.0.1.

To specify DNS server address settings, do one of the following:

- To obtain a DNS server address automatically, click Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click OK.
- To specify a DNS server address, click Use the following DNS server addresses, and then, in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.(which can be obtained from your internet service provider (ISP).

What is the primary DNS and secondary DNS?

There are two basic types of DNS - primary DNS and secondary DNS, which are generally applied to each newly registered domain. They are name server computers where the record of your domain name is stored. The information on both servers is identical. The two DNS values are usually configured by your ISPor hosting provider and given to you as a very important part of your domain registration order details.

In general, domain names can work with only one name server - the primary DNS. However, practice has shown that a domain name needs to have at least two name servers assigned in order to be available at any time. In case there is a problem with the primary name server, the secondary name server will be able to answer the online request for a particular domain. This back-up requirement has turned into an accepted Internet standard that prevents domain names from going offline.

Linksy router

a DNS server stands for domain name service. The DNS server translatesnames from IP addresses. The internet sees IP addresses such as 209.235.250.53 but the DNS server provided by your ISP translates it for you into fixya.com. You should be able to aquire the DNS server information from your internet provider (ISP) hope this helps.
