You can get the manual here
The manual will explain how to change the processor, change the memory and anything else you want to do. It will tell you what processor to upgrade to and how much memory you laptop can hold.
This should fix your problem so please rate this as a fixed solution. I do not know what the other persons point was for trying to answer because he obviously did not know what he was talking about. Sorry about that. Just remember me. I will be glad to help you any way that I can. I will give you my steps that I go by.
Always make sure that you print out the directions and take notes and pictures of every step if you can. Laptops are very fragile and break easy. Do not do this unless you are willing to run the risk of breaking the laptop. This is not an easy job to do the first time.

My laptop was need to activation

A Compaq Presario 700US doesn't have the hardware to run Vista.
1.Processor: AMD Duron processor that operates at 900MHz

2.Ram Memory: 256MB of PC133 ram memory, (SDR Sdram that operates at 133MHz)
3.Graphics: VIA S3 Integrated graphics chip

Your laptop will run Windows XP, but I would advise upping the ram memory amount to the maximum, for the best Windows XP experience. That would be 384MB of ram memory.

Change to Windows XP? Sure. Just buy the full installation disk of Windows XP. (About $95 US online)
Be sure to go into your BIOS Setup, and in Boot Options set the first boot device to CDROM.

Whoever tried to put Windows Vista on that laptop, didn't know what they were doing. That laptop Will Not run it!

On this same laptop, my Presario C501, I want to know what the maximum amount of RAM I can buy and install to make it the best it can be. Right now it is, as purchased, and it has a Celron M processor with...

    usually like this:
    Details of - COMPAQ PRESARIO Laptop - Celeron 1.7 Ghz - C501
    Main Features :
    • Intel Celeron- M 420 (1.73 GHz)
    • Intel 940GML Chipset
    • 1 MB L2 Cache
    • 256MB DDR2
    • 80 GB HDD
    • 24X CDRW/DVD Combo drive
    • 15.4" Widescreen WXGA TFT BrightView
    • Altec Lansing Stereo Speakers
    • 56K Modem
    • Integrated Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g
    • LiIon Battery
    • TouchPad
    • S-Video TV Out
    • 2 USB 2.0
You cand put extra memory until 2 GB RAM but i see no use of it.
1GB RAM work excellent under Winxp
Also, you can get a better hard drive (160 GB).

Adding an additional memory module to laptop...wont start!!!

The problem is that your laptop only supports 2 GB of RAM. If there is not a newer bios allowing more then 2 GB is the max you can go. Since you put the 2 GB in one slot then the other slot will be useless. It wouldn't matter how much you put in the 2nd slot because the bios already says you have 2 GB on board and will not accept anymore. Sorry.

How much ram can i put in a Gateway MX6440 Notebook and can the processor be changed out

for most computers, a 2 gb will do. for the processor, depending on the architecture it has, will depend if it is possible to change it (e.g. if you have lga 440, then it is not possible for a pinless processor to fit in.

    Upgrading my laptop's processor

Possible it is possible, but if I was in your shoes I wouldnt do this to my laptop. First is not worth, a Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 alone costs about £.100, the CPU replacement is not a simple operation and should be performed by an expert repairman, this will cost you about £ 80 plus VAT labour, replacing cooling system with a better one would also be good.
Then after you replace it you risk to overheat your new CPU and blow it, this is one of the reasons why Acer tells customers not to upgrade to core 2 duo. Additionally, if you want to DIY you risk to damage your laptop on a complex cpu replacement operation.
The guy on you tube wanted to show his skills, but I am sure any genuine computer repair engineer will suggest you not to proceed with this kind of operation.
With all money required, labor, and risk involved in operation you will better buy a new laptop, if you really need a powerful laptop buy Alienware, uk custom made supercomputers.
Regarding the memory I know that some customers successfully mounted 4 Gbs on 4315, while I also read on the Internet other 4315 did not support 4 Gb. I assume it depends on Bios version. I suggest to contact the memory seller posted in previous message and ask if 4Gb are supported, giving them exact model number from your laptop service tag, and also ask if you can eventually get refund if this does not work.

    Cheers
