Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop
Just wondering how many hard drives i can install inside my Dell Dimension 4600 PC. There's currently 1 80 gig drive that was factory installed. Thanks for your help.
You can put as many drives as you can fit as long as you have the cables and connection. Usually 4 is the max in a computer, but you can by a SCSI IDE card and add even more. The biggest problem is to make sure that the jumpers are set to slave on one and master on the other. The jumpers are found on the rear of the drives by the power port. The master should be on the end of the cable and the slave should be in the middle. The longest part of the cable will go to the board. Look on your motherboard and you will see an IDE connection and it should have a 1 or a 2 by it; or primary and secondary.
I researched your computer. Here is the list of your specs: I am going to add my notes where you can understand them. I can't fix this for you, but if I helped you get it fixed, please rate it as a fixya. I did more than try; I told you exactly what had to be done.
Manufacturer:Dell, Inc.Part number: D46RL Processor -Type - Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz GOOD PROCESSOR FOR AN OLDER SYSTEM - SYSTEM IS OUT DATED BUT STILL OKAY FOR MOST THINGS. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE PUTTING A LOT OF MONEY INTO IT.
Processor main featuresHyper-Threading Technology -GREAT
Cache Memory - THIS IS PROCESSOR MEMORY -This enables the processor to process things. A Dual or Quad processor is better.
Type-L2 cache-Installed Size-512 KB Mainboard Chipset type - OKAY BUT LIMITS YOU.
Intel 865G - ON MOTHERBOARD USUALLY WITH A HEAT SINK ON IT.
Data bus speed533 MHz - REMEMBER THIS SPEED LIMIT
RAM Installed Size -ONLY 512 MB
-2 GB (max) -NEEDED AND CHEAP RIGHT NOW - IMPROVES SYSTEM AND WILL HELP WHEN MORE DRIVES ARE INSTALLED.
TechnologyDDR SDRAMMemory speed -333 MHz - REMEMBER THIS
Memory specification compliancePC2700RAM form factorDIMM 184-pinRAM featuresTwo DDR channels - THIS MEANS THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO BUY 2 ONE GIG STICKS TO UPGRADE. Memory prices for a new computer might be cheaper. Something else to think about.
Storage Controller Type1 x Serial ATA - IntegratedController interface typeSerial ATA-150 -Remember this speed when you buy a hard drive. It is also only an ATA. They now have SATA drives and they get a lot bigger and are faster.
Storage controller interface channel qty2nd belowI could be wrong. Without seeing this board it looks like it might have 4 IDE channels total. Their wording is strange. This is not common on Dell motherboards. Of course Dell did not make the motherboard. They used one from a motherboard company and had the company possibly put their name on it. Could be INTEL, ASUS, GIGABYTE or some other company. This is why it is better to build your own system. You get what you want.
Storage Controller (2nd) Type1 x IDE - Integrated(2nd) storage controller interface typeATA-100 - **Speed change.**
:Controller Interface Type:Channel Qty2 Storage Hard Drive 1 x 80 GB - Standard - DMA/ATA-100 (Ultra) - 7200 rpmHard Drive (2nd) -You could add one here.
Optical Storage - this is on an IDE and will limit you.
TypeDVD-ROM - IDECD / DVD read speed48x (CD) / 16x (DVD) Optical Storage (2nd) Type16x DVD-ROM Drive +2nd optical storage read speed- 48x Storage Removable - This could be an EXTERNAL DRIVE.
Graphics Controller Type- Integrated-Graphics Processor / Vendor This takes away from your installed memory.
Expansion / Connectivity Expansion Bays Total (Free)2 ( 0 ) x Front accessible - 5.25" x 1/2H, 1 ( 1 ) x Front accessible - 3.5" x 1/3H, 2 ( 1 ) x Internal - 3.5" x 1/3HExpansion Slots Total (Free) ( 2 ) x PCI Could add 2 IDE SCSI Cards here.
Interfaces8 x Hi-Speed USB - Could add up to 8 External drives. CD/RW or Hard drives.
Power provided -250 Watt - This could not handle a lot of hard drives. Not enough power. System will not have enough power to run properly. Honestly I would not put a lot of money into this. You will be better off going with an External hard drive. The External hard drive can have its own power source and it will not need the power supply in the computer. So my suggestion would be to upgrade the memory and get an External drive.
