Question about Toshiba Satellite 3005-S303 Notebook

Toshiba laptop screen extention to external monitor

I have connected a 19 in LCD monitor to the laptop. I can move the mouse from the laptop screen to the external monitor. All the icons are on the laptop screen. I can drag the program to the external monitor but when I activate the program it opens only on the laptop screen only. I tried different combinations on the properties setting to no avail. I'm wondering if the fn+f5 key is affecting the program as it doesnt work. I have a toshiba satellite 3005-s303 running windows me. Also, to add that external monitor appears to be acting as an extention of the laptop screen. I tried to no avail changing the configuration on the properties setting.

You should try and get your f5 key worked, that is where the problem lies.

Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

Video on my toshiba L455=s5009 comes on for a few seconds then blacks out

From your brief diagnoses stated, it sounds like a bad Video Cable.

The Video Cable routes from the motherboard, across one edge of the Fan Assembly, and under the left Hinge assembly,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-Pro-L450-L455/big-body/laptop-disassembly-19.jpg

With just the usual opening, and closing of the laptop, the Video Cable's sheath may be damaged. This means the tiny wires inside the sheath may be damaged.
(Stretched/Broken)

http://www.laptoprepairparts.com/html/details.asp?ref=1860&category=cables

Or it may be the screen Inverter that is damaged, or going out,

http://mcccomputers.com/shop/lcd-inverters/3666-new-toshiba-satellite-l455-s5009-l455-s5045-lcd-inverter-pk070006t20-k000087330.html

Or the LCD screen assembly.

Could be the graphics chipset.

Diagnose.

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect an external VGA monitor to the laptop's VGA connector, on the back of the laptop.

[ RBG (Monitor) port ]

You can use a CRT monitor (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable, for the external VGA monitor.

[ Example of a VGA cable, and a VGA port (Connector),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector ]

Turn the external VGA monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By default the external monitor should show the display, also.
IF not;
1) Press, and hold down on the Fn key, and simultaneously tap on the F5 key. (The F5 key is the Display toggle-over key)

Not showing on the external VGA monitor? Perform the above procedure again.
There are several display options.

External VGA monitor also show the same symptoms?
Bad graphics chipset. Replacing the motherboard is the most cost effective method, and easiest method.

External VGA monitor does Not show these symptoms?
Problem is the Video Cable, or screen Inverter, or LCD screen.

Due to movement of the LCD screen, which means movement of the Video Cable, my money is on a bad Video Cable.

(A Video Cable can be unplugged partially, real easy, on the back of the LCD screen.
It MAY look plugged in tightly, but may not be.

It can also be unplugged real easy when assembling the Display Assembly, to reinstall back on the laptop )

Check the Video Cable's wires with a multimeter. Perform a continuity check of all wires in the cable. (Multimeter set to Ohms)

Have an assistant also gently wiggle the cable, as you are testing. See if there is an intermittent break, due to a stretched/broken wire.

Or just buy a replacement Video Cable, and use it.

I am using a MacBook with an Acer Monitor with a mini connection. The monitor shows the start up screen of the MAC but known of the icons nor does it reflect what is on the MacBook while I am working.

This is a very simple solution, fortunately. The default behavior of an external monitor connected to a portable Mac is to act as extra space, effectively extra screen "real estate," where you can move windows or do whatever else you need to.
Verify this by moving your mouse to the right-hand side of your screen, and then keep going - you'll see your mouse appear on the external monitor.

If you want to have the external monitor reflect exactly what you are doing on the primary monitor, simply go to Apple menu > system preferences > displays > arrangement and check 'mirror displays.'

And that's all there is to it!

Easy way:
Press and hold Fn key, and then look at the F1-F10 keys.. Most likely it is F7, and has a picture like a computer screen.
So, press and hold Fn key, and then press F7 (or whatever key it is for your laptop). This will change your "presentation" settings, and thus switch back and forth from laptop screen, laptop screen + external screen (TV), just external screen (TV).
-------------

If this doesn't work as you expect, just try:

Instructions for Windows XP:

Open the Display Properties window by:
Start -> Run -> %windir%\system32\control.exe desk.cpl,@0,3
(this is the same window where you can change screen resolution).

There you will see two or more "screens", labeled: 1, 2, 3.

Click on "1", and you'll see:

[X] Use this device as the primary monitor
[X[ Extent Windows desktop onto this monitor

Click on "2", this is your TV.. Mark

[ ]
[X] Extent Windows desktop onto this monitor

Then change the resolution to 800x600.
Click Apply

=> now your TV should start showing you a picture.
You can move your mouse between the laptop screen and the TV screen.

If you want just the TV, you can make "2" to be your primary monitor, by clicking on [X] Use this device as the primary monitor.

Perhaps a result of the auto display off. press any key to activate the screen again.

If using the LCD screen, make sure the priority is not set on an external monitor. To do this, press the Fn function key combination to set the display priority.

if you use an external monitor:
1. Check whether the monitor is switched on

2. Check if the power cable is properly connected

3. Check if the cable menguhungkan external monitor and the notebook is connected correctly.

4. Try to set the constrast and brightness on the external monitor

Most likely you have a loose video connection. Reseat the ribbon cable that connects the LCD screen to the motherboard.
This connector is located under the plastic panel that holds the power and various switches near the bottom edge of the LCD screen.

My screen is bigger than the monitor for my toshiba satellite laptop.

Hi.
What is happening is the settings that you have set on your laptop are too high for the monitor to recognize.
You will need to reduce the resolution settings in you display properties which can be found by going to start-settings-control panel- display- and in the display area choose settings.
Some video cards will let you adjust each item. Some you have to use the same resolution on both screens.
Shout if you need furthur input !

Trouble hooking external Viewsonic monitor to Toshiba laptop

If I understand You are using a Monitor connecting the Monitor...
and the background is shared byboth the display however the Cursor stays only on one of them at a time. However it can be toggled among the 2.

If yes,
then this Feature is called the Extended Display.
Use the same Key Combination that you would use for external Display one More time and it should Work.
