Thanks so much. The 'R' did not work but I tried pressing "ESC" key while starting system. Took me to setup screen. I changed the boot sequence and chose CD ROM first. Recognized the Toshiba Recovery disk and installed windows with no problem. I apprecdiate your time and concern. I guess I now need to change the boot sequence back ot HDD first? Thanks.

Hi,

Sounds like you need to run a scan disk,

at c: prompt type " scandsk /f " or chkdsk /f

This will find and fix bad sectors then you should able to format disk

Oh ok, well try booting from the windows CD, selecting " R " for the repair option, then go to the recover console command prompt. When there, type FIXMMBR press enter and type FIXBOOT and press enter. That will rebuild the master boot record and you should be able to boot to attempt a reinstall

you could run the chkdsk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive another way of running the chkdsk utility
click start control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer
then defragment your hard drive

if its a MBR master boot record problem

Restart your computer with the Operating system Setup disk in the CDROM drive.

If you are prompted to press a key to start the computer from CDROM, do so quickly. Otherwise it may try to boot from the hard drive. After a few minutes, you'll see a prompt to press the R key to start the Recovery Console. When Recovery Console starts, it will prompt you to enter a number corresponding to the Windows XP installation that you need to repair. In most cases, you'll enter "1" (which will be the only choice). If you press ENTER without typing a number, Recovery Console will quit and restart your computer. Enter your Administrator password. If you don't enter the correct password, you cannot continue. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type fixmbr and then verify that you want to proceed. Your damaged MBR will be replaced with a shiny new one, and you should then be able to boot your system normally. In some cases, you may need to repair the boot sector in addition to the MBR. If your system still doesn't boot properly, repeat the steps above, but issue the fixboot command instead. Hope this helps

Gooday Toshiba Experts, My 30MB hard drive HDD2181, has apparently a lot of bad sectors. I am able to format it with a recovery CD. Recovery process is aborted repeatedly. The laptop is Satellite...

With so many bad sectors preventing a format, I would recommend the purchase of a new hard drive. You will most likely need to buy an IDE 2.5" hard drive for your laptop. However, you should double check the manual to see if it uses IDE or SATA. You can get whatever size hard drive you want for it.
I wouldn't recommend any manufacturer over the others, they're all quite similar, almost some people have their own personal preferences. Just look for the correct drive type, space you want, at the price you want. Don't focus too much on the manufacture.
The new drive can be formatted with a recovery CD, however it would be easier to format with the Windows CD when you reinstall the operating system.

You either have bad sectors on your HDD or the recovery CD is scratched. If your recovery CD is clean and not damaged then a new HDD should resolve your problem.
Hope this helps,

How i format a15-s127 notbook because it's corrupt.

1. Enter the BIOS - the key to press is written on the main screen, most likely F1.
2. In there change the boot order - put the cd first and the hard disk second - follow the instructions on the screen on how to do it.
3.Boot from your recovery disks and during install choose a full format.

Turns on but does not load

i would like to give passive explanation for this actually first thing you may do is enter bios and restore defaults and change the boot priority to HDD--CD---FLOPPY then save settings and exit to restart >if the problem persists at system start up keep tapping F8 till you get option like safe mde and other and press enter for safe mode with networking now when desktop comes it gives you recovery pop up click on ok and no follow this Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Uncheck "automatically restart" in the System Failure section. now considering the opposite side if system does not comes to this it means HAL.DLL or any other system file is missing so you would be required to reinstall os or use recovery disk..........now reason for this can be virus or trojan that deletes system file and cause crash

Application error when running recovery disk

hi

Did you create any partitions on the HDD?
Obviously the HDD or some partitions on the HDD are corrupt.
In my opinion, you should firstly try to format the whole HDD and delete also whole partitions.
Then insert the recovery CD and try to install the Toshiba image
