My yellow cartridge went empty. I bought a new hp cartridge from Office Max and replaced it. It worked 3-4 times and then stated that I was out of yellow ink again. I purchased a second yellow hp cartridge and tried it again. It will not recognize the yellow cartridge as being full. I uninstalled the printer thinking it might be a software issue. Now I can't install until the printer recognizes yellow.

Re: Display says I am out of yellow,
Hi, since you've already replace the yellow ink cartridge for several times and its not recognize. Your printer might have a defective printhead. You may take your printer to the nearest HP service center in your area so that they can look on your printer further.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

I had same problem with black and blue cartridges. I did all recommendations -- return to factory setting ( no help). Shake cartridges REALLY hard ( no help); reinstall printer/ driver ( no help). What finally WORKED was SWAPPING the cartridges around ( for ex. put red in black spot, blue in yellow). I then got an error message ( b/c in wrong spot). Then I placed them back in correct spots and it WORKED !!! NO more error message that the ship lock was on !!! And this worked with generic cartirdges.
The problem you are describing with the yellow cartridge sounds like ink starvation possibly due to a clogged print head or an air bubble in the print head. Since the machine is so new I would contact HP to get the print head replaced. As for the magenta cartridge, exchanging it for a new one at the store you bought it from should fix the problem. It sounds like the chip on the one you have is either damaged or wasn't set to read full ink levels.
Printhead problems are more common than perceived. Have you disconnected the power cord for the printer to flush the built-in board? Disconnect the printer USB cord as well. If this doesn't resolve the problem call for an RMA. Printheads are not inexpensive.
Same here- I'm running into this problem for the second time in less than 3 weeks on my HP C5150. . Brand new cartridge installed, and it is fine for a day - then 2 days later, after NO color printing - it suddenly shows as completely empty.
Last month when I had the same problem, customer support suggested the following, which seemed to work. (typos were theirs - I just copied and pasted):
Please try the following step's Power your C5150 on and remove all 6 cartridges and close the cartridge access door With your C5150 powered on unplug the power cord directly from the back Press and hold the OK button and the HELP button down together while you plug the power cord back in Keep the button's held down until the display screen goes blank then release the button's and power your C5150 back on When you are prompted on the display screen to install the cartridges install all 6 cartridges and close the cartridge access door Are you still getting the same message ?
I did the printer reset but I only removed the yellow cartridge. follow the on-screen prompt and this process will take about 3-5 minutes. When everythings done, suggest to clean the printer head
Hope this help Anthony L.
