I have the same model and the same problem. Purchased unit June 2006 and I am on my third damper motor and I need a fourth now. Symptoms are the exact same as you described. Costs me over $100 each time the guy comes out cause he says it's out of warranty.

I found this problem addressed on applianceblog.com and per they recomended part # 67006166. My repairman ordered this part and it had been superseeded by an even newer version, # 10127429. He installed that newest version in late June 2008 and it has been great ever since. So for me # 10127429 was the answer. Hope this helps

Try damper part number W10167268 from Whirlpool. They re-engineered the part, it's works different. Whirlpool issued a bulletin to servicers, but won't cover it under warranty (I have tried for many customers) "A bulletin is NOT a recall"

Noise after the motor starts

Is this a clicking or a knock/pop sound? The knock knock sound can sometimes be helped a little bit by tilting the refrigerant filter drier (located in the compressor compartment) to a horizontal position. Ask your technician to do this for you.
