Question about Compaq 39-pin IDE Hard Drive Cable (108950010) Drive Case

1 Answer

Hard Drives not read

I have a PC with a 300GB sata, and a 200GB sata. When starting the computer the memory shows up but not the hard dirves. Other times the hard drives work either one or both, and then at times during the use of the computer it will freeze up. I then restart the computer and it wont read the hard drives yet again. I have guted out the PC and rewired all the hard drives etc. Still no hard drives. I know the hard drives are good. I am not sure what the problem is. I want to say maybe the power suplly isnt putting out enough, but not entirely sure. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

The problem which i feel is
1 not enough wattage of power supply required wattage is 500w
2 PUT ONE DRIVE ON SATA 1 AND run the comp
3 then remove this hd and put another one and run comp
see if it detects as drive both times
then
choose sata 3 and sata 1 for both the drives, one sata 1 and other sata 3
since both would be master this time your problem may be rectified

if both the drives have same firm ware , the drives will report this error permenantly .

last try can be done to remove pcb of the drive and clean the contact surfaces of firm ware and motor supply area. this will solve your problem too. you may notice some dry burned surface on the firmware contact areas.

200gb drive registers as 2000gb when I try to format

why not either rename this drive at the correct size or format and partion etc,
If the drive shows 2000GB then why not put some stuff on it say 300GB and if its a 200GB it will give you a FULL message once it reaches 200GB

Where can I locate a Maxtor: 7245A 245MB 3.5"/SL IDE / AT

That is a *VERY* old disk-drive, not a printer.
Modern disk-drives from MAXTOR are, for example, 200GB or 300GB,
namely about 1000 times as much capacity as the 245MB disk-drive.

Try any local computer-store that sells "used" hardware.
Probably, any hard-drive *SMALLER* than 8.4GB can be substituted, and still be compatible with your computer's motherboard.

Reagarding some Hard disk

You system probably supports IDE hard disks up to 200GB in size. It all depends on what chipset was used on your motherboard. Since it is a PIII system, the 200GB limit is most likely quite solid. Although, you can get past this by installing a PCI card that can handle larger capacity drives. You could also opt for using a SATA controller, but you will be limited to SATA-150 instead of the more current SATA-300 with a PCI interface.

Look to see if your Drive is listed and what the Status, Layout, Type, and File System it has.

Right mouse click on the dive and click on Explore to see if your files come up. If yes, then perform a Change Drive Letter and Path.

Let me know what the status is.

Hard drive connects and then disconnects quickly

Sounds like a bad solder joint or break on the circuit board. If the data on it is important, you may need to use a data retrieval service.

Hard disk problem

hmmm try to make SATA disabled from your BIOS setup. Because windows XP SP2 don't have any SATA driver, its came up with only IDE.

Try to disable your SATA it will fix your problem.

Thanks
