Question about Acer Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I've got an Acer t650 desk top. Normally boots at the push of the power switch but has developed problem where by it doesn't boot first time all you get are fans but then it will burst into life and work all day. Last night it wouldn't reboot via "restart". Checking around the net it looks like PSU. Acer support reckon possibly main board with a repair price of £ 150 min it is of course just (2 months) out of warranty. Any ideas

Check for virus first You could have a boot record virus. that said, once the system comes up, backup your files on say a 4gig USB stick. and reinstall the OS or if the system comes with recovery SW use it and rebuild the system.
If you still have problems, you may have to resort to a new Motherboard. ie (mainboard).
I got news for you they are not that hard to change out.
take a few digital photos of the board before you pull it apart.
Make sure you get the right board. CDW could help you with that. and go one for one with the replacement.
It's not as hard as you think.
replacing a MB takes less than 20 min.
I've replaced over 4000 of them from Laptop to desktop to servers in the past 15 years. they have gotten easier in recent years. just make sure you use a static (grounding) strap when doing this. A carpet shock to a computer component is equivalent to you or I getting hit by lighting. even the ones you never feel will distroy the smaller components over time.

Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the delete or F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults

after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation

the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

If you cannot go into "set-up" then there is a problem with the BIOS. The Bios is located on the motherboard and is the firmware or set of instructions to tell the processor what's connect to it - like the hard drive, mouse, CD drive, etc. Worst case is the motherboard is bad. Inspect the motherboard and re-seat the RAMs. Try to locate the BIOS and if seated in a socket, push it all the way into the socket. Also, check the BIOS battery with a voltmeter to see if has the proper voltage level. The BIOS battery looks like a coin in a socket.

The results you are seeing are actually from the monitor itself. It's telling you the vertical and horizontal sync frequencies to help you troubleshoot your lack of display.

You'd usually see this happen when someone has set the resolution too high, and the monitor just can't handle it.

Power up, and keep tapping F8 until you get a Windows boot menu. Choose "safe mode", let it boot to windows. Go to display properties, and then settings. The slider for the resolution will now be right down. (left-most). Click it once, so that the apply button becomes valid. Hit apply and let it restart.

You should now boot to Windows normally, but with a very low resolution. Go back to display settings and bump it up one step at a time, using the apply button. (which will revert back one step if you don't hit "yes" within 20 seconds).

That way, you can find a resolution that looks right, but isn't too high for your screen.

Having problem installing Windows XP on My Acer Aspire T650 Computer

Before you did the install did you make sure that you set your CMOS setting to check for a cd disk first before booting straight to the hard drive? When you do an install, you must make sure that the computer knows to look for a bootable disk otherwise it will look for an operating system to boot to first. If this is the problem, after you have installed your operating system you must go back and reset your CMOS settings to look for a hard drive or operating system. Hope this help and if it doesn't let me know for further assistance.

It is entirely possible if the CPU fan was not operating properly, the CPU may have overheated and subseqently failed. As for the proper CPU, if you go to ACER's website and enter your computer specs, it should give you the processor that came with the computer.
