Providing that OS you are using contains the drivers necessary for this swap, and the drives use the same connection technology, yes this is possible.

To better answer your question, you can not harm anything attempting to boot from a drive which came from another computer, providing you make no modifications to both software and/or hardware for the connection.

It is common place for a device attempting to boot from a "foreign" Windows install/drive to Blue-screen or "Crash." You may attempt to install the drivers necessary utilizing Safe-Mode.

To enter Safe-Mode continuously hit the "F8" key on your keyboard during power-on.

If the device fails to boot to Safe-Mode, than your only option is to transfer any data necessary from one drive to another medium, or utilize both drives at once with an external device designed for your drive.

Hi there, use any hard drive cloning tool. like Acronis or Norton Ghost. with hard drive cloning you'll get exact copy of your old hard drive to your new hard drive.
Note : Do not format your old drive until you thoroughly check your newly installed drive is working fine and windows 8 is genuine.

All the best.

I accidentally plugged in my laptop power cable (3.5 amp output) into the hard drive, which i believe only takesa 2 amp output, which has rendered it non-operational (the green light flashes on/off but...

If I am reading correctly you have exceeded the amperage for the device and have blown the electronic that give it the ability to operate.
You drive will need to be replaced.
Data recovery is very expensive. There is no fuse in the external it is all integrated circuitry (SMT (surface mounted technology).
You can possibly purchase a new housing or case that has new electronics.
you will have to remove the hard drive from the old case and install it to a new external case.

Yes., stop using it and have to backed up to a new drive as quickly as possible. This is what Toshiba drives do right before they die.

Laptop starts, fan runs, no hard drive led's, no audible hard drive activity, no display, then after about 5 minutes, switches off again

Here in this case, there could be 2 possibilities.

Possibility 1: You might have a to get a new HDD
Possibility 2: The RAM might have got loose

Under Possibility1: If you are able to get the initial display, then get into BIOS and see whether the HDD is shown in the BIOS. If it is so, then you should be able to use your laptop normally.

Under Possibility 2: There is a great chance that the RAM (memory stick) might have got loose. In this case, I would suggest you to take the laptop to the authorized service center and get them checked. If the problem is same as what I suspected, then you the service guys should be able to fix your laptop in just 10 minutes. And they might not even charge you for this.

In any case you could check out the RAM, because most probably this could be the culprit.

This one way the big guys phase out our old stuff. But you should be able plig in external drive , in a usb port . like a 40 gig for about $70.00 at raido shack, and they will stear you in the right direction. thoes guy know there stuff
