Try to delete the upper and lower filters of your Drive from the registry. You must uninstall all CD/DVD recording or CD/DVD writing programs before you delete the registry entries. You can reinstall any programs that you use after you resolve this problem. This article from Microsoft explains the procedure:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/
(Disregard the summary and symptoms in the article, and go directly to 'Methods to resolve this problem')

Generally, this DVD/CD drive has two lasers, one for CD's and one for DVD's. It could be that the CD laser is faulty and may have to be replaced, if trying to use a CD lens cleaner does not help.

Hope that helps! Please post back if the issue continues. If it fixed the problem, kindly take a moment to "Accept" the solution.

Thanks,
IrishDruid

If the cost of replacing/fixing the lens is too high, or a fix is nor possible, probably the best thing to do would be to replace the entire DVD/CD drive.

Have you installed any new software lately? What program are you using to open the cds? Can you view the cds in My Computer or Windows Explorer?

Gateway Support site for your laptop.

You could try updating your chipset driver.

You can also try going to the device manager in
the control panel and uninstall the CD drive reboot and let windows
"find " new hardware...it should reinstall the drive and necessary
    drivers...

The disc may be bad, inserted upside down, or written in a format the DVD player can’t digest. However, if the Laptop behaves like this with all DVDs, including ones that formerly worked in it, suspect a problem with the lens, laser, support electronics, or rotating hub assembly.

More likely, though, you’ll need to dig deeper. Try cleaning the Laptop DVD player’s laser lens with a high-quality cleaning disc from a consumer electronics store.

If this doesn’t do the trick, check with the player’s manufacturer for support options. Your player will likely need to be repaired or replaced. Its spindle may not be spinning the disc properly, or its laser may be failing to operate within parameters.

The pc won't burn cd's seems like it doesn't recognize cds or dvds

Does the cd/dvd drive read cds? This is a good test to ensure that the drive is functional.

Sometimes, generic cd/dvd burners do not recognize certain types of blank discs. Try another type of
brand blank discs, it should work.

My laptop no longer recognizes dvds.....What are all the probable causes for this?

Thanks for using FixYa!

I suggest if you can try to use other types of dvds or cds to your laptop cd-rom. You can buy a lens cleaner to check further. However, if you are facing the same problem, it is better to bring your laptop to a service center near you to further check the hardware problem.

Compaq presario cd-rw/dvd-rom combo drive does not recognize dvds. the driver is installed but dvds do not play.

you may check youe BIOS settings by restarting the pc and repeatedly press F2. Then check your PC or system settings wherein there is a list of peripherals such as Floppy Disk, CD/DVD drive, Network Adapter etc. Those peripherals will tell you if they are enabled or not. use your arrow keys to select and check if the CD/DVD drive is enabled. Then press F10 to exit and hope that CD/DVD would work...

You should notice in your cd tray a smaller cutout in the center. That is specifically for mini cds.

Nec nd 1100A will play CDs but wont record tem

CDs or DVDs?
I have googled it, and it seems that when it concerns DVDs, it is a medium-type related problem. The 1100A will not record the -R discs, and will not recognize the 8x and 16x DVDs.
For specs on the model, go to:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p46434/en/specs.htm
If possible, just replace it with a newer model. They are not that expensive nowadays, since there are many brands manufacturing them.

DVD drive

If your drive doesn't read dvd disks anymore

it is either a dirty (http://www.amazon.com/Memorex-CD-DVD-Player-Laser-Lens-Cleaner/dp/B00008EM7U) or faulty lens or other problem in the circuit board. You can try upgradeing the firmware but Im quite sure it won't fix the problem. If you have warranty get the drive repaired/replaced or buy a new one.
