Question about Canon PowerShot A520 Digital Camera

Shutter will not open fully

I have a Canon PowerShot A520 Digital Camera. When I turn the camera on and look at the LCD, the LCD is black except for a diagonal band of light showing only a small part of the picture I am trying to take. I am using the camera's Auto setting. I can see the whole picture in the LCD if I use the auto focus ring on the top of the camera, but the shutter will close or the picture is not in focus consistently when i use the focus to clear the LCD. I should not have to use the manual focus if the camera is set to the Auto mode. My picures have not been good at all lately.

Am I missing or not doing something that is causing the shutter not to automatically fully open at start up? Thanks for your help.

My Canon S2 IS Powershot camera LCD screen turned black

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, ESPECIALLY for the S2 IS (you should actually complain to Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON. If it is indeed a sticky shutter, they have been fixing this for free). The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Hope this saved you $99.

No image on LCD of Canon A520

2 possibilities,
Either CCD Imager is defective and does not produce image signal Or IRIS / Aperture is stuck in lens assembly. In both cases qualified camera tech can fix it.

Try to see if you can connect the cable to a TV and see if it will do the same thing.

Example: camera - cable plug - to Input of TV.

Blank picture screen

Did you accidentally hit the "DISP" button on the back of your camera? It manually turns the LCD screen on and off to save batteries.

Shutter Opens Partially

This is a common problem for the A520 (it happens on mine sometimes). Recommend trying only the simple fixes listed on the following web page, but do not recommend opening the front cover which is also listed here. The A520 is a little tricky getting back together.
