The "letters" function can be used when storing or editing numbers in your directory.
Press the "DIR" key, which stands for "Directory," located just below the display
Press the key that says "EDIT" just below the display. Using the number keys, enter the first letter of the name to be stored in memory. For example, to enter the letter "C," press the number "2" three times. Continue spelling the name--up to about 15 characters are allowed. When finished, press "OK" located just below the display.
Using the number keys, enter the telephone number, including area code. Press "OK."

I am not sure about the brand & model number you are using. But in NOKIA phone you need to PRESS # for more than 5 Seconds then it will change to letter, word & vice versa.
