A far better and safer way would be to replace the lid.
by wedging a stick in you are bypassing a safety feature and a child or person could sustain a serious injury by openg the lid placing their hand into the drum whilst on a fast spin

Check your drain hose to make sure there is no kink. Make sure the hose dose not exceed the length of the hose that came with the unit. Check to be sure there is no other blockages in the drain line. If these are all clear you will have to check the pump at the base to make sure there is no obstruction limiting the efficiency, Debris such as toothpicks stir sticks coins etc.
