Question about Micro Innovations MCNKB730X Micro Web Access Keyboard

1 Answer

I have a Micro Innovations KB730X Web Office Pro Keyboard. Had it since maybe 2001...I had to re-install the software and the CD does not work properly. When it first came out it, it tells you it MAY NOT work properly with Windows XP, so I hit NO...I was told almost a year later I should have hit YES...that should have been in the tiny manual it came with. NOW when I try to use the CD to re-install the software and drivers, it goes to the original configuration which is NOT allowing it to properly interact with XP, so the scrollbar nor none of the special hotkeys work now. The CD does NOT allow you to change this after a first install...its like the CD remembers your choice! And this was even after a total system restore on my hard drive...MI's website has not been accessible since warly 2009, and I call but get no response or worse cant get through even to leave a message and callback number even. I cant afford a new keyboard (as cheap as they are) and I am so used to the key configuration and location of this one now its hard for me to use a regular windows-based keyboard...

I've had a couple of these keyboards since 2001 as well. When using it with XP my take is this:

1) some of the extra key functionality is done within the keyboard and the rest is done through the driver.
2) The driver is ancient and even precedes XP.
3) XP interprets some of the top row buttons rather than passing them to the driver (thus they will never be seen by the driver). This was not the case with Windows 2000.

Your choice now is to use either :
1) use it without the driver (the scroll wheel will not work but all of the buttons on the left will work). This is what I do.
2) install the driver and the scroll wheel will work, some of the buttons on top will be passed to the driver and you can make them launch a few apps. The other top buttons will launch specific MS apps regardless of what you configure it to do. The left forward and backwards buttons will only work with Internet Explorer - not Firefox, etc.

Take your pick. I have looked all over the world for an updated driver and I don't think there is one. I even looked at the patent documentation to see if I could figure out how to write my own.

Use the control panel to uninstall the driver. If you want to reinstall the driver it does NOT remember settings from last time. It just works so poorly that you might think that something like that is happening. If you still think that is the case use regedit and search for relevant entries and delete them.

Drivers for EZ 8000 smart office keyboard for Vista. Is it available?

This keyboard is a 2001 vintage and I do not think that a real driver beyond Windows 2000 was ever available. I've looked and tried so-called XP drivers and they are a waste of time.

Use it without a driver and be happy with the left side keys that do work and ignore the rest (the scroll bar and the top row of special keys). Not an ideal solution but I think it is your only option for the EZ8000.

Thank you for your question.

My you do have a dilemma there with the key next to your input key also typing. My suggestions would be your;

Keyboard is breaking down or broken, replace with a new one.

Keyboard has random stuff under some of the keys such as dirt, fluff etc, try turning the board upside and shaking gently to let gravity do its thing and the foreign objects fall out. Try vacuuming the keyboard or if possible using an air duster.

If it is a programmable keyboard, such as wireless, maybe the driver needs reinstalling. Unlikely but worth a try.

Kind regards
