Sound like cold solder joints on the vertical output ic. The vertical output ic is usually a inline 7-9 pin chip that begins with la prefix. Not hard to repair at all just be careful not to touch anywhere near the anode leads to the picture! Basically it will knock the **** out of you. lol..

Checked every chip, especially in the VERT area of the main board. Thanks for the suggestion, but I did not find this. At one point, the screen worked correctly for about five seconds. Not sure what caused the correction and I could not replicate it again.

    Thanks for the help.

hit your TV lightly on left side or right side or on top & then observe ..........you will get normal picture or it comes & again it goes....if it is happening like that then following is the situation..........after 4 or 5 yrs in some TVs on main board ( also on CRT circuit board ) at some soldering joints crack develops....then due to loose contact picture becomes small in size or abnormal width, or rolls etc ...........when we hit that lightly then those loose contacts joins temporarly & again picture appears normally for some time............so solution is .....TV main board & CRT circuit board should be observed carefully & most of the joints should be re-soldered.......only a good service engineer can do that........even after hitting TV lightly if there is no response then main board has to be checked completely........in your case iam sure it is loose connection problem.........joints should be re - soldered ...100% it works again ................this problem cannot be solved by user unless user has idea about components( resisitors, transisitors, diodes,...etc) , have soldering iron , multimeter & other tools....................so contact good TV service engineer ........good TV service engineer will charge very less ...absolutely there is no need for new TV........if soldering joints are properly soldered then your TV will work for 1 more year ( minimum )......iam from bangalore - 09986222774 - sathyavijayasarathibabu@ymail.com ( computers, laptop, printers, etc )..............

This could be a capacitor if your lucky but can also be the horizontal transistor. The repair could cost you between 60$ and 150$
My opinion; it's not worth it.

36 Inch Toshiba - Single Bright Horizontal Line

You're losing your horizontal voltage that drives the fly back transformer. Poking around inside can be hazardous to your health since you have to worry about high voltages present on the picture tube even when the TV is off. You may still be able to get parts for those old TV's but they may hard to find. You can try here, but if you have no background in TV repair, it will be pointless.

A bright line on the screen

A line running across the screen like that and then returning to a picture I would guess is the vertical IC has some poor solder joints. The vertical IC in that unit IC401 is an LA78041 a seven pin IC that is mounted to a metal heat sink. On the foil or under side of the board take a careful look at the pins of that IC and any that look suspicious carefully re-flow some solder over.. Careful not to keep your iron on the pin too long.. And if have to re-solder several take some time between them to allow the IC to cool so you don't damage it.. Good Luck Bill

sound like the screen control on the flyback is set just a little too high. the flyback has the red wire attached to the tube. the flyback has 2 small adjustable controls. if you look close enough 1 is marked focus & on is screen. turn the screen slightly to the left & look at your picture. the screen is like a master brightness & if it's up too high you will see what is called retrace lines. good luck.

Green screen with almost horizontal zigzag lines

Is good that you hit it and it reacts, very likely you have loose conections in different places but for the distorted picture you need to check the horizontal driver transformer and flyback after that is corrected you need to check the complete chassis for loose conections.Take your time.Good luck.
