Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

The overhead lights on my Liftmaster Garage Door opener stopped working. I have read many other posts similar to this.... so, please read my specific question at the end of this post. I replaced both bulbs with new, working bulbs. There is still a click heard when the lights are supposed to go on and off. (ie: pressing the light switch, walking through the sensor beam, and 5 minutes after operation) I have removed the bulbs and pried up the contact for the light bulb on both sides of the unit. I have removed the logic board and other side of the unit and checked for loose connections. SO, my question is: Even though I'm hearing a click, could the logic board STILL be the problem? I don't mind purchasing another board and installing it, but I'm hesitant since I'm still hearing the click, Is it possible the board is correctly clicking to turn on the lights but faulting somewhere else on the board before power goes to the lights? Thanks in advance....

    Hi Rob...

Well, although it is your typical "assume you're an idiot" troubleshooting, it does indirectly answer my question. I guess if the click is being heard, it is not the logic board.

I too have two lights... so, it seems odd. Are you going to replace your sockets? If you do, let me know if that fixes it.

Thanks for the follow-up! Good luck!!

I just ran into the same problem on my Liftmaster 2265R. Identical symptoms, but I haven't attempted any remedies with the bulb sockets yet. I shot an e-mail off to Chamberlain's tech support people. I'll post again if I get an answer from them or discover a solution. Please do the same if you find something. Thanks.

4 days after my e-mail to Chamberlain tech support I received the following answer (my opener has two bulbs, and I tried the unplug/plug diagnostic and heard the relay click. I'm still having a hard time believing that both my sockets failed at the exact same time - since when do sockets fail?). Anyway, here's their answer:

    ***** Answer *****
All garage door openers manufactured by Chamberlain are equipped with at least one light. The light should turn "ON" any time the garage door opener is activated.
If your light does not turn on when the opener is activated:
    1. Replace the light bulb. If the problem persists proceed to step 2.
    2. Unplug the garage door opener, then immediately plug the opener back into the electrical outlet. Listen for the light relay on the logic board to click.
If you DO NOT hear a click, replace your receiver logic board.
If you DO hear a click, replace your light socket.
NOTE:This does not apply to garage door openers that use a work light that is separate from the garage door opener.
A copy of your owner's manual can be obtained on the website by opening the Support or Product Support menu, then selecting Instruction Manuals. The model number will be located under the light lens cover on the front or left side panel as you are facing your garage door.
Accessories: Go to the Accessories page in your owner's manual to find compatible accessories for your garage door opener.
Replacement Parts: Go to the Parts Ordering website to order replacement items.

Thanks for posting their response to your question.

Let me know if you replace the socket(s) with any success. Have you tested to see if power is going to the socket?

Sorry, busy weekend. Haven't had a chance to test anything, and probably won't until Tuesday. I'll stick a voltmeter on the the socket, but I'd guess it will show no voltage - since known good bulbs don't work in either socket. If I strike out with troubleshooting, I'll buy sockets as Chamberlain suggested and let you know how it goes.

It would be the relay. The clicking your hearing is the relay input, its likely stuck so the output is not sending anything through. Your check of the sockets with the voltmeter would be a good way to figure this out. If you can see the relay. check its output while your there.

Door stopped working when I was trying to adjust the door. Blinking yellow light on the overhead unit

The motor has a thermal overload that will turn it off it if starts to overheat. Normally a 15 or 20 minute rest and it will automatically reset. The blinking yellow light may be sending a code. If it blinks 5 times and then pauses and then repeats it is the overload.

All of a sudden my garage door motor will not run, only clicks when pressing wall button or remote. garaage door moves manually.

Sounds like the trolley is stopped up against the stop bolt on the rail. This comes from bad limits. This happens often on older Chamberlain/Sears/Liftmaster etc openers.

We have an Overhead garage door. It has started

A bad circuit board or capasitor will cause this, mostly its the circuitboard. Depending on the age replace it with a Chamberlain/Sears opener or they make a model called LIFTMASTER you can only get this thru a garage door company.

Lights on overhead unit on garage door opener will not go off

This is not too uncommon. What tripped the breaker in your house also got to one of the relays on the logic board of your opener. The only cure I know of is a new logic board.

Door opens about 18" and stops

Check the drive belt for tightness. Check for a bent or obstructed track. Overhead door openers have a safety clutch built in in case something or someone gets into the path.

It's the gear drive. There are kits online for about $40, if you're semi-handy you can replace it yourself. Search for liftmaster replacement parts.
