Question about LaCie BRICK (301063U) 300 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hello! I dropped my Lacie Brick (300GB, the blue one, bought in 2006 - that's all I can remember, I don't have it here right now) and now, of course, the HD is broken. I lost my data, but I've been suggested to try to open the case, remove the HD and replace it with a new one. At least, I can turn a common HD in an external one, keeping the cool lego case. Problem is: I don't know if I need a SATA or IDE or what. I can't open the case right now and have a look by myself, but I have a friend offering a SATA hard disk he doesn't need. Does anyone know if it fits? Thank you!

If the disk-drive was LARGER than 500GB, it definitely would be a SATA drive; nobody makes IDE disk-drives larger than 500GB.

How about getting your friend to help you open the case?

Given that it is four years old, it probably pre-dates most SATA disk-drives.

Or, take it to a computer-store, and have them open it, and sell you a brand-new (and thus more "reliable") disk-drive?

I have my 300GB blue brick hooked up to my iMac working as the time machine drive. Today I moved it when dusting and it stared making a rotary dial sound. It seems to be working but it is driving me crazy....

Hello Rachel, First of all, if you`re able to see the information that you have stored in the drive, I think its a good idea for you to save that information, you know back up. That sound means that the drive is missing a part, a mechanical part in which the drive can stop funtioning at any time, hard drives are very delicate. So, if you did the back up, take it to walmart they take in return anything or wherever you buy it from and maybe you can get a new drive and restore all the data to the new drive. good luck

The fact is that you don't really KNOW if the HD is broken, or just a track needs re-written. Do you have a bootable USB drive such as a flash drive, or a bootable CD such as Hiren's Boot CD, Parted Magic, or Dr. Web Cure It? Write back if you need more help!

My 300GB simple drive external hard drive shows up on my mac, and all the files are there, but it won't let me write to it any more. It is nowhere near full, and I have written to it before. I can copy...

Blah, stupid question about this folder, of course you can't.
If you have such possibility. The easiest sollution and almost guarantee it will work.

Copy all files from this ext HDD on your local pc and just format this HDD using windows formatting tool (right click on this HDD in my computer -> Format...)

pick NTFS of course

Lacie icon not showing up on my desktop

Try disconnecting the usb cable from the drive and take the drive to a quiet place.

Power up the drive and put your ear next to it. Listen for the internal disk to speed up and then click (which means it's ready). At this point you should have a solid blue LED on the enclosure.

If not, either the disk is bad, the enclosure's controller is bad, or the external power brick is bad (put your ear next to the power brick and if you hear a faint clicking sound, the power brick is bad and you can order a new one from LaCie for about $16.00.

You rate will be much appreciated!

I dropped it on a floor. Now it gives an alarm sound.'ll need to get a data recovery expert to 'snapshot' your drive to attempt to recover your data. I'd suggest that the 'drop' did a major mechanical deal, like a head impact crash. Not good. A local tech store/computer shop MIGHT have the tools to extract the data. Last time I checked, it runs from 100 to 300 bucks, depending on what kind of files are retrieved.
