Question about Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ85U Plasma TV

3 Answers

We have a Panasonic TH-46PZ85U that we just replaced the power supply board in. In turned on immediately once placing it back on the wall and worked for hours. We turned off and came back hours later and would not turn on again. We went through the troubleshooting of removing the HDMI cord and pulling the power cord. We plugged the power back in and it worked but when we turned off and put the HDMI cord in it no longer worked. Would this by the Y-sustain board that was actually the problem?

We've already replaced the power supply board so it sounds like it's the y-sustain board then? We were told by Panasonic that the code (blinking lights) that it was the power supply board (98%) and possibly the y-sustain. Would there be any other reason for the weird failure?

This morning I had the tv on and then plugged in the HDMI cable in the back and has been working fine. Is this maybe something where we have to turn the tv on before we turn on the cable (HDMI)?

I'm guessing the y-sustain board is maybe a little more complex then swapping the power supply board? Either way, not looking forward to the 40 some screws that will have to be removed and then replaced. Ugh.

Let me know what you think. I do not have an ohmeter...only a volt meter. Is this something I could get at a hardware store?

I don't know if I've ever seen the standby mode.

When it doesn't turn on it goes to the two blink pause sequence on the power light and doesn't turn on at all.

If the tv is actually working then I'm hoping the power supply board isn't fried, yikes. Where would I get a service manual for this tv? I just have the one that came with the tv and it's definitely not a service manual.

That code signals a failure in the high tension modules - since the power source was new then the only other board that uses those tensions - the Y-sus one - is defective. The good part is that now you know for sure what's the faulty board, the bad part now is that it might have fried even the new power board so before ordering new boards you should test them by measuring the voltages - the correct ones are on a sticker on the plasma panel.

Yes it is the Sustain board also know as the energy retention board. The purpose of the board is to charge the capacitors on the board so as to ensure that there is enough voltage to light up the display. The sustain board as you have observerd is slightly harder to remove but I do not think there are 30 screws to remove. Your main challenge would be to remove the ribbon like cables and locks on either side. They have kind of latch like mechanism that will click into place. You should first rise up the the edge of the cable out of the slot and then rotate it in clockwise direction. For the lock it is anti-clock wise direction. The lock has to be removed to detach it from other boards in most panasonic plasmas I have seen. It might be a good idea to get a service manual to fix this one.

The y board and the power board are the most common failures. You should really test them with an ohmmeter before replacing one or the other so you know for certain. Either the ysus board or power board is faulty.

You could get an ohmmeter/voltmeter at the hardware store for an affordabe price. Shopping stores like walmart, kmart, target, ect have them as well.

You can test power with a voltmeter from power supply/inverter to where it connects on the board. Then if you feel up to it but won't be necessary unless the inverter/supply puts out the correct voltage. Test the caps on the board to see if you get around 5 volts.
