Both of those heaters are fine I prefer the Pentair for it's smaller footprint and ease of installation as you can turn it for access to plumbing. The Hayward is tougher to turn the exchanger on and you only have right or left as options for the plumbing to come out. Sta-Rite is still my favorite for installation being easy to plumb, wire and run gas to. It's very easy to change from natural to LP also.
Most heaters today are the same in reliablity and that is mostly up to you to keep the chemicals correct. Being in the business I always look to ease of install and access for repair.

Testimonial: "Thanks for info from an expert. Think I will get a pentair as they are sold in UT. Wholesaler doesn't even carry Hayward. So Techs aren't used to. "

Our Pentair just quit on us. The combustion chamber pipes corroded in less than 2 years. Since the burn chamber is one self contained unit you can't replace a part of it and we had to buy a whole new heater.

Sorry to hear that. Did you have chlorinator after the heater with a back check valve between? Did you run your chlorine at a low level like 1 PPM? I ended up with a Pentair and found tech customer service very good. Also I spent the extra for the cupro nickel metal tubes. Are you looking at buying over the internet? Thousands cheaper than dealers. Will Pentair give you a deal considering? There are several water chem issues beside Cl. Might be smart to bypass the heater when not used and somehow fill with fresh water [no CL] Sorry and good luck.

Hayward makes a great above ground model. Sta-rite is also a great choice. Jandy and Pentair are user friendly and good quality pool heaters. If you stay with one of those four brands, you will be happy with your product.

Hayward Heater H series 400 BTU will not start

This is a normal display when heater is being controlled by a remote thermostat. No service is required. If heater is not being controlled by remote thermostat, change setting by using the MODE key to put the heater into STANDBY. Press and hold the DOWN key and then press and hold the MODE key. HOLD down both keys for 3 seconds until the indication "bo" is removed from the display.
The key to this is DOWN first and then together with MODE, both for 3 seconds.

Make sure the display is not showing "BD".

I received a notice that the filter needs cleaning. How do I do that?

THis is a PRS code (clean filter/strainer) correct?
This simply means that either there is no water flowing through the pool heater (possibly due to a dirty filter)
If you know you have good water flow, then your pressure switch has failed. Replace the pressure switch.
