Canon powershot S2 IS digital camera

When I turn my camera on to photograph my event the screen will be black and I am unable to take pictures. Yet if I flip it over to display it will let me review my photos. I have turned the camera off :& on several times then it may then allow me to take photos. I could find nothing in my trouble shooting guide to direct/instruct me to resolve this problem.
What could be the problem and what are my options to resolve it??

THank you for your assistance,

I have a power shot S2IS, after turning on I am unable to see the figure that I am trying to photograph both through view finder and the pop out screen. I am trying to find answers to why this may be...

I've run into this problem with this model of Canon camera before. It's called the "Black Screen of Death" and there is no way short of expensive repair to fix the camera. Some people claim it's the CCD sensor others say it the optical unit. With all this said and there has been a lot of these cameras die after just 500 pictures, make sure you have removed the lens cap.

My Canon S2 IS Powershot camera LCD screen turned black

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, ESPECIALLY for the S2 IS (you should actually complain to Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON. If it is indeed a sticky shutter, they have been fixing this for free). The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Hope this saved you $99.

Unable to take pictures

Your camera will need a lens. Contact Canon regarding repairs (it may be covered due to a CCD Imager fault)
