Question about Vantec Nexstar Universal Storage Adapter with Built in Card Reader 2535525 IDESATA to USB (CBISATACR) IDE EIDE Serial ATA USB USB 20 Drive Case

1 Answer

Hi FixYa experts, I just bought a Vantec Nexstar Universal Storage Adapter to transfer data from my old computer to my new computer. The new computer is Windows 7 and 64bit. I plugged my old C drive into the Nextar, turned the power on, and plugged it in to a USB port. It makes sounds like the drive is spinning but it is sporadic and only once have I actaully got it to list the contents of the drive. I did copy a few files off of it but it seems to freeze and sometimes Windows thinks it's a removeable drive and asks it it can format it (I never let it). Since my old computer died and I don;t know why, I'm not sure that the drive is 100% okay, but I've also had trouble with Windows 7 and the 64bit architecture too, so I'm stuck not knowing whether it's the drive or the OS. Any help would be appraciated. Thanks, Bill

SOURCE: Vantec Nexstar 3 HD not being recognized on comp

Hi, I had this same problem - blue light flashing and the drive not being recognised.

The problem was with the power cord, not the drive.

I solved the problem by unplugging the connection on the power cord between the outlet end and the power brick section, and re-plugging them after flipping one of the ends over.

The drive was now getting power correctly and spun up and was recognised as usual.

SOURCE: Windows 7 NexStar drivers and installation needed

No device-drivers are needed. Just connect this USB device, and Windows will recognize it. If there is a "one-touch-backup" button, it won't work, but you can still use drag-and-drop to copy files from your internal disk-drive to this external disk-drive.

Iintend to change my sata hard drive to a SSD hard drive. How do I format before change

When you install Windows on your new SSD hard drive you can then transfer data from your old hard drive using an USB hard drive adapter or install the old hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an USB external hard drive after you have transferred your data to your laptop.
When you connect the USB hard drive adapter to the laptop, the laptop will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the various folders anf files and copy them to your new hard disk.

Get hold of a desktop computer that is working. Open the Hard Disk Drive cover of your laptop. Pull out the Hard disk. Get a cable (an example is Nexstar universal storage adapter) which can be used to connect your laptop Hard disk to the desktop via USB port. A desk top allows multiple drives. This way you can get the laptop HDD as a seperate drive in your My computer, (like you see a pendrive or a CD drive. You can try reading this drive and copy content to the desktop. Pretty easy to transfer data and a useful device to have. You can find this device at http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-Universal-Storage-Adapter/dp/B002PXFZ3C

You might want to take the drive out of the case and use and external drive connector to see if the drive still works.

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT FLASH DRIVES

USB (Universal Serial Bus) flash drives are high-speed, high-capacity memory devices designed for long-term data storage and easy transport among PCs. The host PC treats the device just like a drive, so you can transfer files of all types to and from the device. Because the device emulates a drive, it supports any type of file, including audio files (such as MP3s) and graphics files (such as JPEGs [Joint Photographic Experts Group] and BMPs [bit map]). In addition, USB flash drives can easily support applications, CAD (computer-aided design) drawings, and a wealth of personal information you'd rather not leave on any particular PC. Even so, most USB flash drives are smaller than a pack of gum and can easily fit onto a key ring.

Years ago, users often referred to the practice of using floppies to transport files among PCs as sneakernet. Because USB flash drive manufacturers designed these devices for transport among PCs, their increasing popularity has given rise to a "new sneakernet."
