Probably your firewall or network settings. Check that the program you are using is defined as an exception in the firewall, and see if any ports need to opened.

I have a Sony SNC-RZ30N webcam that I can only view the video from on a very few computers, all of my more up-to-date computers only see a blank screen in the browser view.

1. Go to the Windows Desktop, click on the "Start" button, and then click "Run" or "Start Search" if you are using the Windows Vista operating system.
2. Type the following text into the text box:
1. "devmgmt.msc" Click OK.
2. Select your computer when the Device Manager window opens, and then select "Action" from the options at the top of the window.
3. Choose the "Scan for hardware changes" option from the drop down menu that appears.
4. Insert any USB device such as a mouse or flash drive into the USB port in question. Now simply check the USB device to see whether it is working in order to test the port.

What is the Port Number to setup in my 2Wire modem portforwarding

I assume your intention is to view the cam remotely.

You only need to forward the following:
HTTP Port - TCP
RTSP Port - TCP and UDP

You may also optionally forward the other ports if you want to view your videos on a mobile

People cannot see me on cam

every application when it connects to the internet, it uses "ports" , now if the port that the messenger is trying to use for the "cam" is blocked , you basically experience that kinda problem. first disable your firewall (try windows first, then any other firewall (like norton, mcafee or other), also check with your Router or Modem (if DSL) but usually these ports are open by default, but you never know sometimes untill you check it. but your best bet is the firewall that is blocking your port for the cam.
disabling the firewall is the easy solutions, opening the ports is the longer one. of help on opening ports on you DSL modem OR router (or both), check this site
good luck

My lifecam vx 5000 won't install. says i'm not connected to the internet (i am) or server not available. why?

check your firewall and add the cam as an exception.
what operating system are you using?
if your using vista make sure your driver is searched for by the hardware manager, unless you have a vista driver.
it sounds to me like the windows firewall is keeping the cam from communicating outside.
here is a link to a driver Life Cam Driver

Also, make sure your plugged into a usb 2.0 port.

Good Luck and Thanks for using FixYa

Doesn't work on my home network on MSN/WLM

this could be a problem with WLM's permissions with the firewall. First check to make sure the webcam is working by using the software that came with it. And make sure if it is a quickcam that the software it came with is active. If your home PC isn't recognizing the cam it could be not plugged into a USB 2.0 port, or the driver is corrupt etc etc. If it is recognizing it then check that WLM has proper permissions in your firewall for sharing the image. Also allow WLM to calibrate the webcam, which is available under it's tools.

Further if the latest version doesn't want to work with your webcam there could just be a simple incompatability. I'd try to rollback the wlm back to an earlier version.

Inability access from other computers

You need to check with your router vendor on how to setup DMZ or Port Forwarding for your DCS-5220 in your router. (For Port Forwarding, please open BOTH HTTP Port and RTSP Port and select the Protocol as TCP for HTTP Port and select the Protocol as TCP/UDP(Both) for RTSP Port.

Need help

Hi what you have to do is "Open Port(s)" in your Firewall. I have found a tutorial link below to help. Simply you need to find out which "Port(s)" ya need "Open" then "Open" these "Port(s)" through the Windows Firewall, & OR any Other... by following the tutorial & use that/those "Port Number(s)" for real. I believe for Yahoo the "Ports" needed to be "opened" are. Both UDP/TCP 5000 to 5010. Meaning open 10 "Ports" through ya Firewall. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial40.html
