Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Loose connection Several times a day I am live on the internet, I go away for awhile and upon return my connection is lost. I have to go and reset my modum and router to regain connection. Contacted the provider they say my modum and connection is fine. I by pass the router and go direct into my desktop or laptop and everything works fine from the modum. The router is only a month old. and they won't take it back for exchange. I need some help to be able to stay connected and be wired to desktop and wireless to laptop all the time. modum is also less than a month old. thinking about getting a hub to indirectly connect everything to the internet. Use the hub to branch off the signal from the modum to solve this dilema.

Hi Black Wolf - could you please tell me the version number of your router? It can be found on a label with the model #.
    Thanks,

    Jeff

Most problems with routers are software based issues. Most manuf. make firware updates to fix issues they have found with the software. Usually a call to the manuf tech support will walk you thru a firmware update or a replacement under the manf warranty.

  1. Update the Firmware on your router.
  2. When you lose internet, look on your modem and make sure that no lights have gone out. (i.e. Cable) If this one goes out, it is your provider.

Make sure to download the one for your specific model, and do the flash via a wired connection.
If no change, most likely a new router is in order

1. this issue may be due to the age of the router and also firmware updates need as it reads
2. check the manufacturers site for update instruction set
3.Here are some step to try to see if the router is indeed grandfathered:
1.Log into router. Using either 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 in a browser window that is ( internet Explorer or Firefox)
2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) ( router status window)
3.Note router name you are connecting to.
4.. Check the laptop/desktop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses.
5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. This set up in the "security tab" in the router. using 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 to access through a browser.
6.Note router name you are connecting to.
7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet.
This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
8. check for firmware update at the manufacturers site for your model router
9. cell phones, cordless phones, digital TV's, can affect the data signal from a router. Also distance from the router can be a factor. If your router is in a basement place the router to a upper floor and center it in the room.

The router will not stay connected to the internet. Only works every couple of days and only for a short period of time (minutes usually). Power cycling and resetting seems to do nothing.

The first thing that I would do is to reset the router to restore its internet if only for a few minutes. Then follow the link to get the latest firmware for that router. Through the web interface flash the firmware to the latest version. For instructions on how to flash the firmware, they are on page 10 of the manual available at the second link below.
Cheers

1. if you have a power adapter connected to this router it may have burn out when restoring power several times in the way you shut down.
2. When visiting the manufacturer website and researching your unit I found that the unit is "discontinued" and there is no other support for it.
3. I suggest that a new router be purchase with update technology to get the most from your internet experience.

I hope this helps. Have a great day!

The unit looses internet connection

Generally this is a common sympton of any brand of wifi router over about a year or so old. The wifi section is in the process of failing. It will loose the connection more and more and then the wifi portion of the router will no longer work. I have a pile of various brands that displayed these symptoms before they stopped working.

What you need to do is replace the router. We have had better results with D-Link and NetGear wifi routers. Linksys seems to be the worst one right now. This is unfortunetly a common failure in non-commercial grade wifi routers. So the best advice is to check for a sale on the dlink or netgear and replace it. It will save you a lot of headache and frustration.

Dell truemobile 2300 shows connected to internet, but isn't

When you reset the router, did you first shut the router down, then unplug the modem (wait 30 seconds), reconnect the modem (wait for all lights to go to "normal mode"), reconnect router to power, check for activity light on modem, wait about 30 seconds after all is powered up? If not, try that sequence and let me know if it works.
