Question about Dell Dimension 8300 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Dimension 8300 Desktop Installed a new hard drive and clock battery today after 2 years of inactivity. The bios is probably messed up and when I try to load ubuntu 10.10 off a disc, I almost instantly get a message saying something to the effect of "press F1 to retry or F2 to go into setup" Perhaps all I need is the standard BIOS settings for the 8300 series, but do you have any other ideas? The computer is detecting the new hard drive and I have it set to install the operating system, but somewhere, something is going wrong. Thanks for any ideas!

All parts other than the hard drive and clock battery are original. I just checked the website and is there any other option other than paying 25 bucks to install xp since I really want to put ubuntu on it?

How do I reformat a Dell dimension 8300, it will not do anything after inserting the operating system disk

You need to make the DVD drive the first bootable device.
F2 on boot up should take you into the bios, it should say on the first screen as you boot what key takes you into the bios/setup.
Change the boot settings to allow the dvd drive to boot first.
It should now say press any key to boot from cd/dvd when you put your installation disc in

I have a Dell Dimension B110 and it only detects 256 mb. I have installed a WD 500GB hard drive and installed 2 - 1 GB RAM and still nothing. I think I need to change the BIOS but don't know how.

Hello,

Yes, you need to change your bios setting. The best thing to do is the reset the BIOS to default and check your system after the reboot. Good Luck

Hard drive continue to clicks, message to hit F2 to configure.

If you have a clicking hard drive and the system gives a F2 to continue but will not boot, most likely you have a hard drive failure.
Boot to the BIOS (F2 at boot) reset the defaults and save, see if anything changes.
Most likely, you will be replacing the drive

Dell Dimension 8300 - Can't Boot from XP Disk

When in doubt do without, that is remove the new hard drive cable and power, remove the DVD drive and try loading booting the XP from just this CD device. Enter the BIOS and check if the system sees the device. If it's not found in the BIOS then you'll never boot anything. Address it as the Primary device on the cable (I don't use CS) and see if the BIOS sees it.
If you get CD device seen in the BIOS then try to boot the CD in it. If it boots then power off and connect up your 40gb drive (optioned as Primary) on the other cable. Now power on as check the BIOS for the drive and the DVD device. If both are seen then boot the cd and try to load XP. After it's up and running install the other CD device as a Slave on one of the cables.

Dell Dimension 5510

Normally you would set it up to boot from:
1. CD/DVD drive
2. Hard Drives

There may also be a floppy drive to add in whereever you want it.
This problem sound like some kind of drive controller or the drives are not being recognized in BIOS...check and make sure you see the hard drives when setting the boot order.

Dell2 2400 BIOS F2 reads backwords.

It sounds like you may have the IDE cables hooked up backwards on your motherboard.. The IDE cable slot on the motherboard labled IDE1 should be where your Hard drives are if you want them to read as primary. The Optical drives are usually on IDE2, designating them as secondary.
Let me know if you need more help.

Dell 2400 wont recognize harddrive

I don't know how old the Dell is but I have not seen a BIOS setup routine that did not automatically find and recognize a new hard drive for many years. Perhaps the BIOS is the source of the problem.  Did you try the removed drive in another system? Did you check the CMOS backup battery? If this needs to be replaced, it may not recognize much of anything.

Dell dimension 4600

check in the bios that it is your new hardrive it is seeing, and not your old one still sitting in thr bios memory, as taking out the battery doesnt always delete the cmos memory.

There shoul be an option in the bios to auto recognise the drive
